Following a very hard week and the sad loss of our "Danno" I wanted to share our experience and the significant benefits of having a dog in the office as part of your team. Since the day our doors opened here at Broadreach Danno was part of our team and he enhanced our company culture. He was, in a way, part of our internal hiring process showing his approval of visitors by parking himself next to, or on them. He greeted visitors to our offices and invited himself to every meeting, he has helped raise £1000's for our chosen charities on charity walks and brought an element of calm to our busy working day. Last week we very sadly lost Danno, it was very sudden and we are all heartbroken. What I do want to share though is the HUGE value of having your pets with you as part of your team. Broadreach is a family business and our dog was part of our family and our team.He brought people together in our team and with the exception of the occasional "missing sandwich" there are no downsides whatsoever. 🐾 Considering bringing dogs into the office? Words cannot describe how proud I feel towards Abby Studnicka and Archie & Alfred. Abby has become a dear friend of mine, someone who I admire greatly, and has been our greatest cheerleader at zant. Now it's my turn to be hers. Her product, Archie & Alfred is a dog accessary line that every dog owner should be a part of period. These are products that keep your dog happy and safe while also looking and smelling fresh! It has been such a privilege to cheer her on and be a witness to her growth. Ever heard of the "Starfish Story"? 🌟I heard it first when our family decided to adopt a teenager from Eastern Europe - and in that context, it still gets me choked up thinking about it. It goes something like this: A man walks along a beach, filled with thousands of stranded starfish after a storm. As he throws one back into the ocean, someone asks him, "Why bother? You can't save them all." He responds by throwing another one into the sea and says, "I made a difference for that one." Now, think about it: what if we all took that approach in our lives and work? It's a powerful idea, and it ties perfectly into our next Straight Path principle. Principle #14: We give back – Straight Path will never dictate how we give back. However, a Straight Path person invests in others. Be it SQL community sharing, non-profit work, ministry work, etc. We find the time to help others. We invest in people and our world. -- Sure, I'm running a company. Sure, we have a bottom line. But people attracted to the culture, values, and principles want to give back. The team wants to support giving back. And everyone does to a degree. We want to be there when someone wants to throw a starfish back to the sea - whatever that starfish is to them. I don't ever want to retire as I see things now - I couldn't leave the team, culture, and group we have - but if this principle ever went away, I'd be out. I know I know; I’m sharing another #Ilovemyjob post - but it is true. Part of working in #employeeengagement is making sure that there is a high level of enthusiasm and dedication that our colleagues feel towards their work, each other and abcam. We want them to love what they do, where they work, who they work with and what we work for. A few months ago, I had a few folks ask me if we could look into starting a coed basketball team. The league we found was way over our allocated budget, but we still forged on. The team came up with a great idea for fundraising - a “plated lunch”, which we hosted last week. Team members each brought in dishes including Haitian patties, lasagna, fresh dumplings, egg fried rice, potato salad, meatballs, pulled chicken, pasta salad, apple crisp and cookies- and more! The whole Waltham site came together to purchase plates and I quickly realized people weren’t asking for change back and were giving more than the suggested amount. I had venmo’s coming in from remote workers “For the 🏀 team!” “Go abcam basketball”. At the end of the day, we raised the more than the funds we needed to, and we’re currently in 3rd place in the league!
