Check out this entertaining, yet powerful, video directed by Raine Allen Miller, where Oscar winner Olivia Colman, alias ‘Oblivia Coalmine,’ sarcastically thanks viewers for unwittingly contributing to fossil fuel industries through their pension funds, fueling a lucrative year. The campaign, by Make My Money Matter seeks to raise awareness about the detrimental ties between UK pensions and the climate crisis, urging pension schemes to divest from companies driving fossil fuel expansion. Founded by filmmaker and activist Richard Curtis, the campaign empowers savers to align their money with values for a better world. Curtis jokingly added: “I’ve seen some dark, dystopian characters in my career, and that doesn’t even include Hugh Grant in Love Actually. But I think Oblivia Coalmine is right up there with the worst.” Want to clean up your banking, insurance and pension/super? Well, this is good content.
**New film starring Olivia Colman** Meet Oblivia Coalmine, the fossil fuel exec thanking pension scheme members for contributing to a ‘warm snuggly future’ by investing through their pensions in oil and gas companies that don’t have credible decarbonisation plans. UK pension savers have an estimated £88bn in fossil fuel companies – despite reports showing that no major company has committed to halt fossil fuel expansion before 2030. This creates not just a climate risk, but a financial risk to pensions too – climate impacts will hit member outcomes hard. And with fossil fuel demand likely to peak this decade, the risk of stranded assets grows with every new development. No one is saying we won’t need oil and gas for some time to come, but what we don’t need is ongoing exploration and new fields. It doesn’t make sense from a climate perspective nor a financial one. And the public doesn’t want its money invested like this. New public polling shows that just 19% of UK pension holders support their scheme investing in oil and gas, compared to two-thirds who support their pension investing in renewables. But when our collective efforts should be focussed on this biggest challenge of our time, it’s a problem that - despite the efforts of many passionate people, and pockets of progress – the finance industry as a whole is not acting with an urgency commensurate with the crisis we’re in. Most of our pension funds are not setting out sufficiently demanding expectations of asset managers and investee companies (red-lines on new fossil fuel expansion are like hens’ teeth, solid deforestation policies are hard to come by). Major asset managers are not voting robustly enough (with a threat of divestment) to attempt to drive change. And our largest high street banks continue to finance some of the worst climate offenders. Last week Faith Birol at the IEA said COP28 is a ‘moment of truth’ for the Oil and Gas industry, and the accompanying report states that most oil and gas companies are watching (the transition) from the sidelines. Could the same be said for much of the finance industry? Now is the time for brave leadership in finance - to all those brilliant passionate people in the sector, and to the CEOs, boards, and shareholders who know deep down what they should do: We must all step it up now…. Advertisements and campaigns are powerful means to communicate a strong message. Some are beautiful, some are funny, and some are downright gross. But they’re all creative and all showcase what can happen when the industry throws its weight behind the issues of our time. 2023 was the year that climate communications came into its power, conveying the urgency of our climate crisis while speaking to the public in a relatable, and non-condescending way. Make My Money Matter is a campaigning organisation working to shift our financial system away from profiting off fossil fuels and towards investments that build a socially and environmentally just future. The latest Make My Money Matter campaign focuses on pensions. Do share your views on the power of such campaigns. #makemymoneymatter #climateaction #climatecommunication #fossilfuels #pensionfunds

Great stories needs heroes and villains. Make My Money Matter is a not-for-profit calling for the UK pension scheme to rule out new coal and oil financing. Problem: How do you help people realize their own power over a problem they don't know exists? Casting fossil fuel execs as oil-guzzling, cash-grabbing villain is the perfect vehicle to get people to sit up and pay attention to something we can't see: the movement of money. Perhaps more importantly: releasing this ad just prior to COP28, is strategic. It's driving strong emotions (which is what we know makes messages memorable), but that's going to turn up the heat on investors and decision makers discussing climate targets tomorrow. 👨🍳 😘 This is a masterclass for progressive organizations. Progressive messages often lead with "stop doing this" or "don't do this." The problem is that by telling people what not to do, you're calling attention to the very thing you don't want. (shoutout to George Lakoff's book 'Don't Think of an Elephant'). In order to win, we have to shift from talking about what we're resist (don't invest in fossil fuels) to painting a desirable picture of the world we want to create. The desirable world MMMM are creating: fossil fuels = the villain. Everyday investors are the heroes. This requires a willingness to be bold ('put fossil fuels out of business' vs 'invest sustainably')...and have a little fun. Make joining in irresistible. At Future Super, we consistently saw when we were willing to be bold and be a bit cheeky, so were our members. Movements don't have to be funereal. They can also be fun! Bravo, Make My Money Matter, for being willing to make a brave ad. And the data shows that it works - check out System1's latest post). If you want more on brands connecting creative to the bottom line, this is the place I shamelessly plug my newsletter (🔗 in comments). P.S. Look into your pension fund. This is one of the single biggest levers ordinary people have on climate.

Your on minute pre-COP28 must watch clip, 𝐎𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞, explains why we should be divesting our pensions from fossil fuel, right now! Kudos to Make My Money Matter, for the clip starring the Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, highlighting that £88 billion of UK pension savers money is invested in fossil fuels. As our planet approaches its limits, we know this has to stop. It's far too easy to inadvertently fuel the climate crisis. As Make My Money Matter point out £88 billion of UK pension savers money is invested in fossil fuels. Is yours? 🫣 Insights from Beagle | Certified B Corp suggest that pensions are at the bottom of switches consumers are interested in making. Which is counter-intuitive because it's one of the easiest changes to make, it takes about 5 minutes. From the comfort of your sofa you can ensure your hard-earned savings flow into businesses tackling climate change. As they say at CIRCA5000, what’s the point in retiring in a world on fire?

Even though investing in a pension fund would reduce our taxes significantly, we have not been able to do it. Exactly because of this reason: current pension funds fund the degradation of our planet. So, with no real regenerative alternative, we decided to invest in Food Forests and Nature Restoration. Because when the going gets though, you can't eat nor breathe money. How is your pension fund investing its money? It is time to take responsibility. Let's share this video widely and ask your pension fund to divest.
