Caregivers have must dispense medication in a safe and timely fashion. Navigating the different pill sizes, colors and dosages can be an intimidating experience. Elderly and infirmed clients may take a slew of pills that need to be doled out on a regular basis. Most medications are taken once or twice a day. It is a good idea to keep medications in a safe and secure place. Some medications have to be refrigerated, but most can be safely stored in a secure cupboard. Pharmacies have developed blister packs that link the pills with specific days of the week. All medications should be administered at the same time every day. Modern pills have been designed for specific durations and maintaining a regular dosing schedule will decrease the risk of adverse reactions. Dosages of drugs should not be changed without first consulting the client’s physician. It is recommended that before taking over-the-counter products, herbs, vitamins and supplements speak with a physician. They may interact with the client’s normal medications by increasing or decreasing the medicinal concentration in the body. Check the expiration date on the prescription bottle. Medications that are only used on an as-needed basis may become ineffective if left too long on the shelf. It is prudent to double check the prescriptions that are picked up from the pharmacy against a home list of medications being given. The employees filling the prescription are human and may make mistakes. While most seniors face major adjustments when transitioning to an elder-care community, Jewish seniors face additional challenges. Caring for veterans in hospice care at the end of life is an honor and a privilege. Our veterans have unique needs in their final months and days, and in hospice, we work to help them achieve some modicum of peace as they transition. Many of us are not familiar with the term “soul injury” which is described as an injury to one’s psychological or emotional well-being. While soul injuries are not unique to veterans, their wounds are often overlooked or go unnoticed. Hospice programs understand the need to not only recognize a veteran’s physical and moral injuries - but also the guilt and shame that we now understand as an injury to the soul that takes place after trauma. Validating soul injury and helping to heal the wounds allows veterans not only to mourn but to forgive themselves and others. This is yet another reason for veterans to consider hospice care. Today, VA announced that Veterans, and their families, caregivers, and survivors now have access to expanded burial benefits to help with end-of-life expenses related to a Veteran's gravesite, burial, funeral and transportation of remains to their final resting place. Burial benefits are available to individuals who pay for a Veteran's burial and funeral costs that are not reimbursed by any other organization. The updated burial benefits are: • Expanded reimbursement of transportation expenses, to include costs for transporting remains, to state or Tribal Veterans' cemeteries in addition to previously eligible national cemeteries. • Instituted a more generous single payment rate for non-service-connected burial benefits. • Extended the VA plot or interment allowance to Tribal organizations. Currently, a veteran must contact the VA within 72 hours of receiving non-VA emergency care; otherwise VA may deny payment for these services even if the veteran is eligible for treatment. Veterans suffering medical emergencies should not have to worry about whether VA will deny coverage or refuse payment because of administrative notification time requirements. H.R. 3644, the Addressing Care Timelines (ACT) for Veterans Act would provide an additional 24-hour period for veterans to inform the VA when receiving care at a non-VA facility under the Veterans Community Care Program. DAV supports H.R. 3644, in accordance with DAV Resolution No. 205, which calls for the improvement of emergency care benefits for service-connected veterans: specifically, for VA to provide a more liberal interpretation of the law governing payment for emergency care and reimbursement to veterans who have received emergency care at non-VA facilities. We ask all DAV members and supporters to contact their representatives and urge them to co-sponsor and support H. R. 3644, the ACT for Veterans Act. #DAVCAN #ACT4VETS
