⚠️ The Victoria Chief Health Officer (CHO) has issued an advisory to raise awareness about a significant increase in whooping cough (pertussis) cases in Victoria, particularly amongst school-aged children. This increases the risk of transmission to infants (particularly those under 6 months) for whom infection can be life threatening. Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial lung infection which mostly spread to other people by droplets from coughing or sneezing. Symptoms usually progresses in the following pattern: 🤧 Cold-like symptoms like a dry cough, tiredness, runny nose and mild fever. 🤮 Bouts of severe coughing with a high-pitched ‘whooping’ sound when breathing in, which may be follwed by vomiting. Coughing may last several weeks. 🫁 Apnoea in babies and young children, where they stop breathing and may turn blue. If you, or someone you know, are experiencing these symptoms, please isolate and seek medical care immediately for diagnosis and treatnent, to reduce risk of transmission. 📞 In case of emergency, please call 000. 💉 Free pertussis-containing vaccinations are available and recommended for infants, children, adolescents, and all pregnant people (between 20-32 weeks of pregnancy). Catch-up vaccinations are also available for eligible people. 💉➕ Booster vaccines are recommended every 10 years for childcare workers, early childhood educators, healthcare workers, household contacts and carers of infants . 🩺 Health professionals must ensure that infants and pregnant women are up to date with their routine pertussis immunisations because natural immunity does not provide lifelong protection. It is important to maintain a high clinical suspicion for pertussis as adults and infants do not always show classical symptoms. 🌐 For more information on pertussis, visit https://lnkd.in/g3939jAW 📚 To read the full CHO advisory visit https://lnkd.in/gp8AtQkR #WhoopingCough #CHOalert #WinterHealth #Children #Babies #KidsHealth
