Teamwork learned from Cicadas this week: I spent a great week in Chicago this week with one of our clients and then for a team meeting. If you don't live in Chicago, you may not be aware of the volume of the 17-year cicada brood. When I say 'volume' it isn't just numbers, it is sound-level-volume. They are LOUD. It took some getting used to the noise and chaos, but once I stopped to really assess, there was a symphonic quality to the sound. How do each of their different sounds come together to sound like waves crashing on a beach? It is a good reminder to bring our voices together for aligned purpose on our teams, even when we come from different places. Every Thursday, we have a co-founder meeting for Kebaonish Inc. I wanted to share something that Shyra Barberstock, PhD, and Rye Karonhiowanen Barberstock, PhD, instilled in all of our meetings to incorporate Indigenous ways of being into our collective company. At Kebaonish, we uphold rich traditions in our meetings by starting with a round of acknowledgments where each co-founder shares how they are doing. This practice serves several important purposes: Fostering Balance and Harmony: It sets a positive tone for our discussions and promotes a peaceful and respectful environment. Building Community: By sharing and listening, we strengthen our sense of community and mutual support within the team. Emphasizing Reciprocity: Acknowledging each other's experiences reinforces the importance of give-and-take in our personal and professional relationships. Setting Intentions and Encouraging Mindfulness: This practice helps us become more present and focused, ensuring that our interactions are meaningful and productive. Promoting Healing and Inclusivity: It creates a space for collective healing and inclusivity, where everyone feels valued and heard. In essence, this tradition helps us start each meeting with a sense of unity, purpose, and respect, laying a strong foundation for all that follows. I can say that john snell, Michael Carrick, and I have really come to appreciate and welcome this approach. Reflecting on my recent experience as a co-facilitator for a strategic gathering with a manufacturing company, I can't help but marvel at the power of collaboration and trust in such endeavours. Close to a hundred individuals from different corners, all converging in the serene ambience of Mussoorie for a blend of strategic discussions and leisure. As we navigated through various activities, the lessons learned were profound. From the importance of concentration and meticulous planning to the art of coordination and synergy, each moment underscored the essence of working together towards a common goal. One thing that stood out throughout the entire process was the significance of faith, appreciation and absolute freedom in co-facilitation. Trust is the invisible thread that binds co-facilitators, allowing them to seamlessly complement each other's strengths and navigate challenges together. It's an art, knowing when to step in, when to step back, and when to harmonize efforts for maximum impact. Kudos to Sujeet Shinde for the opportunity and being so abundant with the factor of trust and appreciation all the way. You have been the best by far. In the end, as we wrapped up the session, it was evident that the success of such endeavours hinges not only on the agenda or the activities but on the foundation of trust laid down by those at the helm.
