Presenting research at the AEHS West 33rd Annual International Conference on Soil, Water, and Air is an exhilarating opportunity, particularly when it involves groundbreaking work on a topic as critical as the impact of warfare on environmental health. This year, we have the privilege to share our study on the issue of heavy metal soil contamination on Iwo Jima's Invasion Beach, a site of immense historical significance from WWII, renowned for its distinctive black volcanic sand. Our research delves into a largely unexplored area, despite the beach's popularity and the common practice of collecting its sand as war mementos. The core of our investigation focuses on examining the heavy metal composition of the sand and debris through XRF analysis, a technique that promises to shed light on the potential contamination risks these souvenirs may pose. Through a detailed review of existing scientific literature on volcanic sands and the analysis of soil samples from areas affected by war, we aim to provide a thorough understanding of how warfare can leave a lasting mark on soil quality and contribute to contamination. Our study is not just a scientific inquiry; it's a call to action. We underscore the critical need for adopting sustainable and accurate armaments to reduce the ecological impact of warfare. While it may seem a distant goal to eliminate warfare entirely, minimizing its environmental consequences is an urgent and achievable aim. The contemporary context of ongoing conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, makes our research not only relevant but vital. We advocate for further exploration into sustainable alternatives, like biodegradable ammunition, to foster environmentally responsible warfare practices. In conclusion, our presentation at the AEHS conference is not merely a dissemination of our findings but a message of the imperative to understand and mitigate the impacts of warfare on soil contamination. It's an exciting platform to highlight the necessity of sustainable practices in preserving our planet for future generations, making this opportunity not only thrilling but deeply meaningful.

Why might four of MVA's colleagues be in Germany when MVA is a Danish-Swedish organization? By now you probably know that it is very important for us as cluster organization to support and facilitate cross-border life science collaborations in #MediconValley - and one of these, the #HALRIC project, involves not only Sweden and Denmark, but also Norway and Germany. So we are very actively involved in the project's second conference, which happens to take place in Hamburg today ✅ But there is more to it! This particular Scandinavian-German consortium also helps us think forward to the opening of the #FehmarnBelt fixed link. That new connection will bring the life science sector of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein much closer to Medicon Valley, the strongest life science cluster in the EU, enabling strong synergies. Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC)Spring Scientific was a great meeting. Here are some thoughts: 1- The next breakthroughs in IO will come from areas that have been under studied and had received not much commercial attention such as immunometabolism and microbiome. The science is maturing and these areas will have a broad impact on all things IO, cell therapy, cancer vaccines, bi-specifics, etc. 2- The possibility of re-programming terminally exhausted T-cell through metabolic interventions is quite intriguing. Remember these cells live and chang out in the tumor and they don't respond to checkpoint inhibitors. We just need to get them going and Greg Delgoffe is working on exciting interventions to get these cells going. 3- If you get dendritic cells in a tumor their right kind of food (glutamine) then they can jump start anti-tumor immunity. 3- Avoid artificial sweeteners. Bad for your T-cells. 4- Bacterial based therapies can turn cold tumors hot. 5- You can find oral bacterial genomic material in brain tumors and brain metastasis most likely got their by immune cells. 6- We need to understand tumor supporting and immune supporting diets. 7- We need more metabolism and microbiome intervention trials. You can learn more from treating one patient than many observational and mouse studies. Ultimately our goal is to treat humans not mice.
