OPTIONS FOR UK TO REACH 24 GWs by 2050... EPR vs SMRs Is the "Versailles" EPR the only option at Sizewell? Seven Rolls Royce SMRs would amount to 3200 MWs. At L35 billion total for Sizewell C, each RR unit would need to beat L5 billion (for a 470 MW reactor). With a "fleet" order of 7 (like Dreadnought, or AUKUS), RR could beat L3.5 billion a unit -- less than L25 billion total. With more jobs in UK than in France, non?. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?  OR... for L35 billion, UK could get TEN RR units for 4700 MWs (about 38 million MWhs a year), instead of just 3200 MWs (26 million MWhs)... oui? That is nearly 45% - 50% more MWhs every year for the same money. What is "Value for Money"? With more jobs in the "Midlands Engine". Additionally, with 7 or 10 units, instead of taking down 1600 MWs of EPR off-line for fuel changeout, only 470 MWs would need to be off-line for 2-3 months. Any SMR configuration would provide more MWhs. Eh? Some might say, "Well, the RR unit has not been built yet"... a similar PWR design is working in subs now, has been for decades, now upgraded to the PWR3 in 2011. ✍ Hinkley's once in a generation economic impact shows why we need to get on with Sizewell C Nuclear Industry Association's CEO Tom Greatrex assesses new figures released this week which show the significant impact Hinkley Point C is having on the social and economic make-up of the South West of England, with 8,000 people trained so far, many of whom are from deprived areas, 1,300 apprentices trained and over £5 billion spent with local businesses. 'Sizewell C is in line to deliver these once in a lifetime benefits we’re seeing at Hinkley with a supply chain and workforce ready to take on the challenge. Well on the way to some much needed new nuclear capacity, with tangible economic benefits as the build happens. High time to get Sizewell over the line, and the fleet of smaller modular reactors underway, so energy security can be improved, emissions targets met and skilled long term jobs created.

“Hinkley is having a once in generation impact on the social and economic make-up of the South West, from jobs, to training opportunities and supporting companies in the local supply chain. So far, more than £5bn has been spent with local businesses, far exceeding the original £1.5bn target. By the end of construction, £7.3bn will have been spent with companies in the South West. Indeed, every nation and region in the UK is seeing the benefit, with 3,800 British businesses making up the supply chain.” South Australia in particular would benefit greatly from a nuclear power station and desalination plant at Cape Hardy to provide water for Eyre Peninsula to replace the overdrawn underground basin water and the water being piped from the river Murray. Plus the energy needed to mine and to value add the large quantities of minerals before export from a region bigger than the British Island.

Btw: Off the Top-of-my-head the closest seems to be 9,000+ Site Manpower at the recently Completed/Operational Vogtle 3 & 4. (AP1000) NORMALIZATION As part of my extensive Expert Testimony/Witness related to the PRUDENCE Investigations of Nuclear Power Plants across various U.S. Jurisdictions in the Courts, I had always relied upon appropriate NORMALIZATION Techniques (among other things) as an integral part of my use of "COMPARATIVE Analyses". 12,000 WORKERS DRIVE RAPID PROGRESS AT HINKLEY POINT C Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction is advancing rapidly, with approximately 12,000 workers now on site preparing for the installation of the first reactor in Unit 1, with reports that work on the second reactor unit is progressing 20%-30% faster than the first, thanks to improved methods and learning from experience. Innovations include a new welding technique that is four times faster and increased modularization for more efficient factory-based work. The final ring for reactor 2 will be installed later this year, with the dome following in 2025. The project has already invested over £5 billion in the South West economy, engaging 3,800 British businesses. Additionally, 8,000 people have received training at the project's three Centres of Excellence. These advancements and lessons learned at Hinkley Point C are being incorporated into plans for the proposed Sizewell C project in Suffolk, potentially improving efficiency and reducing costs for future nuclear power station construction in the UK. #NEI #NuclearPower #NuclearEnergy #NuclearIndustry #EnergyInfrastructure

As an industry, we haven’t always taken advantage of all we can learn from previous nuclear projects to improve planning and execution for future ones. Failing to do so is part of why the industry has earned a reputation for cost and schedule overruns. The lessons are out there. We can find them in project records, individual experience, and lots of other sources, both internal and external. The problem is that the process has often been informal. Project teams are (understandably) consumed by what’s going on day-to-day. They don’t make capturing lessons for future use a priority. So those lessons are often lost. Jim Carter just wrote a paper that addresses this problem. He explains how to develop a structured lessons learned program to make sure each new project can benefit from the ones that came before.
