The ship, named Pyxis Ocean was fitted with two Wind Wings sails in August 2023 and sailed across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. During a six-month test, Chief executive John Cooper of BAR Technologies, the sail developer, reported the Pyxis Ocean's fuel savings. After sailing globally for six months, Cargill, revealed the findings. The Pyxis Ocean saved an average of 3 tons of fuel each day. In favorable weather, it demonstrated potential savings of over 11 tons daily. WindWings sails, towering at 37.5 meters, are installed on the Pyxis Ocean, taking minimal space. The sails operate automatically, requiring only crew intervention to adjust them for added power. #cargoship #emissions #maritime #ocean #sustainability #sustainabletransportation
That’s a numbers game. They saved 3 tons, how much does it consume? 30 or 300? What’s the cost and carbon footprint of the sails? What space does it occupy that can’t be used for cargo which will go on a different ship? What was the cost? Was it any faster or much slower? What happens in bad weather?
With Lightning activity increasing it is essential to protect the wind wings from lighting strikes, a strike without Sertec Protection could effect the operation of the Wind Wings... we are proud to be protecting Pyxis with our CMCE Diamond. www.sertecmarine.com.
Shipping industry is one of the largest consumers of fossil fuels. This can be a gamechanger 👏
