Collaboration: The Keystone of Conservation in the Heart of the Himalayas In the rugged terrains of the Himalayas building community capacity through the "Heart of the Himalayas" initiative exemplifies the transformative power of partnership. This collaborative project unites National Park officials, Forest User Groups, and Local Coordinating Committees from five villages. Each brings unique strengths and local knowledge to enhance the community conservation model. Together, they strengthen protective measures surrounding the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Makalu Barun National Park. Their joint efforts focus on sustainable forest management, preservation of endangered species, and developing alternative livelihoods that reduce dependence on forest resources. This strategic collaboration underscores the importance of working together to achieve conservation goals that might be unattainable in isolation. Such a model of cooperation serves as a beacon for global conservation efforts, proving that united communities can significantly impact environmental stewardship.

"Since the project started in 2013, it has prevented the release of more than 5 million tons of climate-heating greenhouse gases. That’s roughly equivalent to taking more than 1 million gasoline-powered cars off the road for one year. The project is expected to prevent up to 30 million metric tons of carbon emissions over its 30-year lifetime. When the project started, the park’s wilderness conservation was mostly funded by philanthropy and tourism. Now, carbon credits account for much of the local conservation budget—a more reliable form of finance that is improving the lives of the people and wildlife of this fabled landscape. “When the credits started to produce tangible benefits that communities could see, that’s when it started clicking in people’s minds,” said Nailentai of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. “People started believing in the project. They felt a sense of ownership over it.” When people slag off on carbon credits because of a dodgy project here and there, I've always found it fairly annoying. Carbon projects when run well return power to many rural communities that are the carbon baskets of the world. These locations are massive carbon sinks and are supporting the rest of our behaviours, and it is only right they get compensated for their contributions. For climate purists that suggest that protecting forests through carbon projects has no additionality, I'd suggest otherwise. You can see that protecting these forests has immense benefits to the land itself as well as the communities that live off the land. So yes I'm a believer in well managed, and regulated carbon markets. Today our company Tellus Conservation is excited to announce that we have secured initial funding to begin the process of restoring Bombo Lumene’s 2900sq/km landscape. Bombo Lumene is an existing protected area that sits in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and is a beautiful mosaic of tropical forest and savannah grasslands. Over the next few months we will be conducting a large scale feasibility study assessing the ecological factors, community needs and governance structures necessary to implement a nature-based carbon project in the reserve. The insights from this study are crucial for project design and vital for obtaining sustainable, long-term financing. Our priority is to develop a solution that not only conserves nature but also brings tangible benefits to local communities. This is an ambitious project. Sadly 77% of the reserve’s tropical forest cover has already been lost and illegal poaching remains widespread. Without bold action, even areas such as Bombo Lumene that have been put aside for protection, remain doomed to failure. We can and must do better. In many ways this project is an exemplar of the wider challenges we face as humanity; how we confront the twin challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change, how we mobilise large scale finance for the protection and restoration of nature and how we build equitable futures for the local communities that call these magnificent places home. We are excited, humbled and proud to try to be part of the solution.
