Why should businesses invest in supporting small-scale fisheries? Insights from our recent panel shed light on this crucial query from unique but interconnected perspectives. Josette Emlen Genio from Bluer Seas Philippines, reflected upon the experience of launching Better Seafood PH (Bluer Seas Philippines Inc), a unique of its kind Responsible Seafood Sourcing Standard aimed to revolutionise the domestic market. When the journey started, she said, there was “zero demand” for sustainable seafood, "but three years later the supply can't keep up with the demand". Hugh Govan, who has been working with SFP in integrating criteria around secure tenure rights and participatory management in SFP’s rating system FishSource, stressed the lack of attention to small scale fisheries issues in certifications and ratings, and pointed to the unresolved role of industry in addressing those. Yet, standard development is only one tool to transform the market. Chilean fisherfolk leader Claudio Pichaud noted the challenge they face to engage supply chains in supporting their fisher-led Stone Crab Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), a sentiment that was echoed by Andre Brugger “If we say our product comes from a FIP, but we are not supporting the FIP, shame on us.” Very proud of leading SFP’s Small Scale Initiative and its amazing team since its conceptualisation and launching in 2021. Crucial for economic development, livelihoods and food security, small-scale fisheries make 40% of the global seafood landings and employ around 90% of the global workforce in the capture fisheries sector. Transitioning towards a sustainable and equitable aquatic food system calls for a profound transformation of the market, so that all levels of the supply chains behave in a responsible manner. Thanks to all the participants in the panel: Josette Emlen Genio Genio, Hugh Govan, Claudio Pichaud and Andre Brugger, for sharing your views during the event. Great job by Amber Von Harten, Pedro Ferreiro Velasco, Courtney Sakai, APR and everybody at Sustainable Fisheries Partnership who worked to make this event possible at the Boston Seafood Show. At last, a major step forward in the management of wolf populations and harmonious co-existence! COPA and COGECA welcome the long-awaited news that the amendment of the Bern Convention and thus the Habitats Directive, to allow the proper management of the European wolf population, has passed in COREPER I today. We are glad to see institutions listening to the needs of farmers and rural dwellers despite the many pressures from those who often don't have to deal with the consequences of attacks. This decision will provide European livestock farmers with greater peace of mind, as predation remains a constant mental burden that contributes to the fragility of pastoralism in many regions. We look forward to Member States engaging actively with local stakeholders on management plans to better allow harmonious co-existence to be actually achieved. COPA and COGECA are now calling for rapid ratification of this decision at the Competitiveness Council (COMPET) and a notification to the Bern Convention secretariat before October 1st. Yesterday was #seaweed day to celebrate the 40th anniversary of FAO GLOBEFISH! 🎉 For those who missed it (but wish to stay in the loop), here are the top 3 key takeaways from the dialogue on strategies to support the sustainable development of global #seaweed markets: 1️⃣ A robust economic, trade and employment data collection system is essential to assess the impacts of seaweed production and develop effective regulations. 2️⃣ Stronger partnerships are needed to address the sector's fragmented nature, such as the creation of a United Nations Task Force on Seaweed, as the seaweed industry remains largely underrepresented. 3️⃣ UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), FAO COFI (Committee on Fisheries) and FAO GLOBEFISH can play pivotal roles in enhancing marine data frameworks and promoting dialogues and partnerships - we have been doing so in the last decade! A strategic dialogue on what agri-food in Europe needs in a long-term perspective and a predictable way forward is most needed. While prioritizing economic interests, we must ensure that it doesn't eclipse the imperative for social and environmental justice. I appreciate the emphasis on inclusive policies aligning with the values of the EU. However, I firmly believe that investing in sustainable agriculture and nurturing new growers is vital, particularly with an aging population. Without such investments, Europe risks facing higher imported inflation and a local production void. Let's advocate for a future where sustainable practices and support for new growers take center stage in our agricultural policies. #futurefarming #sustainableagriculture #nurturingyoungminds
What agri-food in Europe needs is a long-term perspective. A predictable way forward. Today, we're launching our strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture. The time has come to find a new consensus. Watch live the opening address by President von der Leyen at the first meeting of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture in the EU ↓
