Here at the Center for Nutrition & Health Impact, every month is Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month 🍒🥑 In June, we're celebrating all that food offers us—from community to preventing chronic illness—fruits and vegetables are the foundation to a healthy diet. At the core of what we do, equal access to fresh fruits and vegetables is at the front of our research, programming and evaluation. Whether it's supporting more scratch cooking in school lunches, connecting local farmers to local markets or supporting national food banks with innovative programming, improving availability and affordability is key to better health outcomes. Addressing barriers to access and considering social detriments of health—such as economic stability and health care access—is something we weave into our research and evaluation so we can better connect and understand effective programming for better food access. 🌱For nearly 10 years, Chilis on Wheels has worked to make healthy vegan food accessible to communities in need through direct food relief, education, and mentorship. We are proud to work on policy because we recognize that beyond individual direct food relief, we need systemic and institutional change to increase access to healthy food. We are excited to share our coalition win with all of you! The USDA released its updated child nutrition meal patterns, which include several wins for our Healthy Future Students & Earth Coalition and students across the country! Plant Powered Youth Steering Committee was critical in advocating for these improvements. We were thrilled to see the USDA’s acknowledgment of plant-based dietary preferences in their Rule Summary and to see the USDA in the Federal Register Notice writing about comments they received from the Healthy Future Students & Earth Coalition and our allies around the importance of expanding plant-based options and removing barriers to accessing non-dairy milk. While there is still much work to do, especially around removing barriers to plant-based milk, we applaud the USDA for the changes, which support plant-based and plant-forward nutrition and more flexibility for traditional #Indigenous foods and traditional food crops. A huge thank you to Friends of the Earth U.S. for convening our coalition and to all coalition partners and allies. These are the results of collective efforts, and every person who submitted comments helped make this happen. Thank you to our incredible Plant Powered Youth Steering Committee- students driving this incredible change! 🌍💚 LEARN MORE HERE: https://lnkd.in/giCZHRYX #FoodAccess #FoodSecurity #PlantBasedMeals #Veganism #VeganEats #HealthyEating #HealthyKids #SchoolMeals #Community #NutritionForKids #FoodInsecurity #ChildNutrition #PlantBased

Transforming the food pantry model into a free grocery market model with an emphasis on nutrition and dignity isn't easy, but it's achievable...and important. Food insecurity shouldn't mean losing the opportunity for choice and fresh food! #freshfoodisthebestfood #reducefoodinsecurity #servedignity
The Outreach Center is one of the first food pantries in Greater Williamsburg and Hampton Roads to bring the Fresh Food Room model. Our Fresh Food Room is made possible in part by local farmers like KelRae Farm in Toano and through the generosity of local retailers like Trader Joe's in Williamsburg store 657! Because of these partnerships, we can offer a daily, self-select, market-like environment where neighbors experiencing food insecurity can come and "shop" for farm fresh produce, dairy, and health-conscious prepared meals. Nutritional options for individuals facing food insecurity can make all the difference between health and complicated issues related to diabetes, heart disease, and other factors. We at the Outreach Center strongly believe in providing a wide range of healthy foods for our households to make good choices in their eating habits while having access to the ingredients that will help them get the most out of their food. So, thank you farmers for making this possible! #ThankYouFarmers #AGDay24 #FeedingAmerica #FarmsFeedingAmerica

In #Kenya, #milk is one of the most popular animal-sourced foods, and is often consumed in small amounts by children of low-income families in urban settings. These findings show supportive policies for the informal #dairy sector can promote the availability and affordability of good nutrition for growing children. 🌱 Rhode Island launches first-of-its-kind SNAP program to provide extra benefits for fruits and vegetables 🍎🥦 It's inspiring to see Rhode Island taking a bold step towards promoting healthier eating habits and supporting its residents in need. The new SNAP program, as reported by The Boston Globe, will offer additional benefits specifically for purchasing fruits and vegetables, aiming to improve nutrition and overall well-being for low-income individuals and families. This initiative not only addresses the issue of food insecurity but also underscores the importance of access to fresh, healthy food for all members of the community. By incentivizing the consumption of fruits and vegetables, Rhode Island is setting a powerful example for other states and communities to follow, demonstrating a commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles and combating preventable health conditions. Kudos to Rhode Island for leading the way in innovative approaches to addressing food assistance programs and promoting healthier choices. This is a significant step towards building a more equitable and healthier future for all. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this program and hope it serves as a model for positive change in other regions across the country. #SNAP #HealthyEating #CommunityHealth #Nutrition #PublicHealth #RhodeIsland #HealthEquity 🌱🍎 https://lnkd.in/gYyUJgRb
