#MissionMoment: Devon’s Inspiring Journey from Farmers’ Market Crew Member to Full-Time Staff and Young Farmer. At Sustainable Food Center (SFC), we believe in building deep connections with our community to drive and inform our mission. So it's not surprising that many of our team members come from the farm and food community. Meet Devon Sisneros, our Farmers’ Market Coordinator. Devon’s journey with SFC began over four years ago as a part-time farmers’ market crew member. In the last year, Devon was promoted to full-time Farmers’ Market Coordinator, started Sun and Moon Farm with her partner AND became an SFC Farmers Market Sunset Valley vendor! She brings her real-life experience to the table to help shape SFC’s mission and vision. We are grateful for Devon and proud to support young and beginning Texas farmers as we work towards a food system where people and the environment thrive. #FarmersMarket #TexasFarm #TexasAgriculture #CentralTexasYoungFarmers #NationalYoungFarmers #TexasFood #LocalFood

Recently, our Food Hub Client Manager, Amy, got to visit Benny Boy Farm and see behind-the-scenes operations in person, as well as meet the chickens and, of course, Benny Boy himself! The small Rougemont farm isn’t just focused on producing superior protein, feeding the community is central to its mission. Whitney, owner and head farmer (and former Farmer Foodshare employee!), dedicates her business to supporting local food access initiatives, and we are grateful to partner with them this month. During May, VERMONT FRESH NETWORK's Gold Barn Month in Vermont, we want to recognize some of our partners who make our ability to serve local possible. Featured commitments are one tool that we use to strategically drive local and regional food spend. We work with our distributors 6-12 months in advance to commit to purchasing a set amount of each product on a weekly basis, most of which are automatically shipped to our kitchens. We'd like to introduce or reintroduce you to our Local Beef Program with Black River Meats. Read more about our featured commitments at https://lnkd.in/gERPgh9w In an addition to the decades old Black River Produce company, the group created a state-of-the-art meat processing facility in 2014. This facility helps keep Vermont raised beef in the local economy by processing it right here in the state, and assures farmers have a reliable market for their beef. Black River requires all participating farms to follow humane animal and sustainable crop management practices. Our Commitment: Through our partnership with Black River Meats, our campuses commit to using local ground beef each month. Before the start of the program, campuses across the state were purchasing 8% of their ground beef products from local sources, in review of our FY23 spend, statewide, that number is up to 17.2%!

I make movies. For entertainment, for marketing, and to train complex skills no one else can. Hire me when you need media that's GUARANTEED to work.
There's a lot of fearmongering about the quality and safety of food, but do you ever wonder about the current precautions that actually keep you safe? I'm in the development and fundraising phase for an aspirational documentary for the food industry, and I'm looking for sponsors. If you know or have contacts with food companies who are doing it right, please share this with them. Specifically, we're highlighting these industry sectors: #globalagriculture, #transportation, #foodmanufacturing, #grocery, and #foodservice. This project includes a training component so that other companies will follow suit, and implement the change we need to thrive as a species.

🌱 QFF welcomed yesterday's announcement that the Queensland Government has accepted all recommendations from the Supermarket Pricing Select Committee report, including the appointment of an interim Queensland Food Farmers Commissioner for a period of 12 months. The Interim Commissioner will assist producers to navigate supplier arrangements with #supermarkets, and scope a range of consultative, advisory, mediation, transparency and advocacy functions. The new role will be a statutory officer and locked into law. This is in addition to supporting farmers by rolling out the ‘Geared Up Growers’ pilot project, in partnership with Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers. This includes launching retail and #farmgate price reporting on a range of essential goods. Other measures announced in response to the committee's recommendations include: 🚚 Enhanced delivery of subsidised freight services across the state through three separate regional assistance packages. 🛣️ Ongoing roll out of major transport #infrastructure commitments to support regional and remotes supply chains. 🐄 Funding for eastAUSmilk to develop a Queensland #Dairy Industry Plan in consultation with industry stakeholders. QFF CEO Jo Sheppard said the Queensland Food Farmers Commissioner will play an important role in working with farmers, the supply chain and government to focus in on the key issues that need to be addressed if we are to support strong food systems. "“The establishment of a Queensland Food Farmers Commissioner an important first step as we continue to create an environment that enables sustainable #FoodProduction for future generations.” Read the full media release here 👉 https://bit.ly/4dBp1L4 #Agriculture #QldFarmers #Farming

Founder & Director @ Think Regeneration | Leadership & Change Acceleration | Board Member @ Resource Central
This is a tough one. We appreciate our partners in the state agencies who are working hard to launch this LFPA program in Illinois, but we also have to speak up on behalf of the farmers who are not being paid, and not being told when they will be paid. It's not chump change — it's hundreds of thousands of dollars that we've told farmers they should be getting, but we have no clear idea of when. Farmers deserve better. They deserve to be paid and paid well for helping the state solve enormous problems like food scarcity, a lack of local food supply infrastructure, and inequities in access to nutrition. The money is there. We encourage our partners at the state to lean into this conversation and do whatever they can to get them paid, and rebuild the trust that is eroding, day by day by day. #regeneration #leadership
We've been waiting to speak up, but it's time. Our organization will help distribute more than $1 million to underserved farmers this year in Illinois through the LFPA program, but we owe farmers tens of thousands of dollars—including one farmer $16,000 for their labor—because the state is months behind on issuing payments for services. One farmer has loaned our program $120,000 to ensure some farmers can get paid. To create an equitable food system, it is essential that public-private partnerships are working for trust and establishing practices based on real-world economics. We are learning, however, that bureaucracy can challenge even the best intentions. "This is what they always do to us," one farmer told us. We are encouraging Illinois farmers to speak up, as the state owes everyone a good explanation for why so many farmers are being told to "be patient and wait" while the bills pile up, especially when Governor JB Pritzker toured the state announcing the program was ready to begin on March 5. Thanks to Chicago Tribune, Karina Atkins, the Stewart & Travis families, Run-A-Way Buckers, Down at the Farms LLC, Farm Family Foods, Budded Mattah, Valley Fresh Produce, and all the amazing people who are working to feed hundreds of families each week. And thanks to all the farmers for working with us, and giving us the benefit of the doubt. They prove there are superheroes in this world ... Edit: We did hear this morning from some leaders that they are not too happy about this. We hope to see them resolving this quickly, transparently, and without hesitation. https://lnkd.in/gGGrc8SN #regeneration #leadership
