Breaking the Cycle: Overcoming Poverty, Homelessness, and Substance Abuse In our community, the challenges of poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse often intertwine, creating a complex web that can feel impossible to escape. But every individual deserves a chance at a better life, and together, we can make a difference. Hand in Hand: It’s crucial to recognize that overcoming these challenges requires more than just individual effort. It takes a supportive community willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. Understanding the Connections: Poverty can lead to homelessness, which in turn can fuel substance abuse as a coping mechanism. Breaking free from this cycle requires addressing the root causes and providing comprehensive support. Providing Stability: Access to stable housing, healthcare, and education is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness. By ensuring these basic needs are met, we can empower individuals to rebuild their lives. Building Support Systems: Recovery from substance abuse requires not only professional treatment but also strong support systems and a sense of belonging. Let’s foster communities where individuals feel supported on their journey to recovery. Creating Change: It’s time to come together as a community to break down stigma, increase access to resources, and advocate for policies that support those facing poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse. Together, we can be the catalyst for change and create a brighter future for all. In August 2023 I joined the global Antler start-up program that helps entrepreneurs develop their business ideas at the speed of light ⚡, and provides access to pre-seed funding. One big take I had from the program was "Characteristics of a good problem to solve": 1) Painful: So painful or expensive without fixing, that potential users have a high willingness to pay. 2) Popular: Millions of people are afflicted. 3) Frequent: Users experience the problem several times per day. 4) Growing: Structurally growing potential market. 5) Urgent: This needs to be solved right now. 6) Unavoidable: The problem will still exist, despite e.g. regulatory changes. I struggled between running an idea ticking all the boxes from my experience in the logistics industry, and another idea within ART. The art idea DID NOT TICK ANY OF THE BOXES. ❌ 🤦♂️ Guess my choice of venture? Those of you who know me. Art of course... 🤗 Long story short. No VC backup at this stage, but the iteration continues. At the speed of a turtle, we are now entering step one in trying out a new concept of experiencing art... The Public Art Gallery aims to be a globally accessible physical art gallery by connecting artists, art collectors, and curated venues. Our mission: To transform selected spaces into vibrant galleries, capturing the true spirit and meaning of art. 💚 Whatever happens, I´m proud that we now collaborate and iterate with one of the largest coffee shops in the Nordics; Waynes Coffee, and one of the most recognized art galleries in the Nordics; NOA Gallery. The concept at this stage is very low-tech, manual, and hands-on 📠. Nevertheless, we have learned a lot already, and I´m looking forward to the next 999 steps before the idea looks something at the level I´d like it to be. 😁 Next time you are in Stockholm, grab a coffee at Waynes Coffee ☕☕☕, Vasagatan 40. Is it possible to break out of the scarcity mentality trap that many museums get into? It is possible. Inspiring, courageous, generous, and bold leaders like Sally Shaw MBE, Director of Firstsite, prove it every day. When you talk to her, as I have done today, it becomes very clear. It is possible to overcome structural constraints by believing in other values such as generosity, unconditional community support, trust in each other, and inviting others to share them. I love Sally's museum-cave concept. Despite the passage of time, human beings remain the same and seek similar things: to connect with others, to feel part of others, to feel respected, valued, and supported. Sally and her team make this possible because, as she says, the more you give, the more you receive and generate. This is how a museum arises from the mentality of the gift and collective generosity. During the planning of the Haunted Rose Presents Threshold of Darkness, I implemented a story concept that I haven't seen utilized in other haunted attractions. We had a very elaborate Frankenstein/ Dr. Jekyll Lab Scene that would feature a confrontation between. Dr Frankenstein's monster and a transformed Dr. Henry Jekyll into Mr. Hyde. This scene would play out every thirty seconds in front of our guests. Because we knew schedules wouldn't allow for all characters to be present in this scene every single night of the run, we came up with contingency scenarios, that would enable the talent to play through the scene in any combination to a successful narrative. Scenario 1: Dr. Jekyll drinks the transformation formula and steps behind the curtain as alternative build talent emerges as Mr. Hyde, frankensteins monster breaks free from his restraints and they proceed to fight as the guests exit the scene. 3 Talent Max Scenario https://lnkd.in/gvCcQB_9 Scenario 2: Dr. Jekyll plays as Dr. Frankenstein instead with Talent dressed as Igor to resurrect the monster. Too many anecdotes for here, but because of the way I was asked, the reaction and response, I get the feeling there is an element of “chest thumping” or "one-uppersonship" or a "pissing contest” going on, as if experiencing and traveling to and/or through some place or space somehow legitimized a claim to ownership? This has come up enough that it was added to the list of "assertions, discrepancies, inferences, intimations, innuendos, rumors, suggestions, speculations, zingers (whatever you want to call them)” to be addressed. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary we are highlighting a video series called "I am Preservation" to exhibit the widespread love of landmarks throughout the City. Please join in the celebration and send us your video. We will post clips throughout the rest of the year on our many social media platforms. TIPS for making your own "I am Preservation" video. Say your name, and if you like, the neighborhood that you live in. Briefly comment on what you love about New York City landmarks or a specific historic building, place, or structure. And, finish by saying “I am Preservation!” Film in landscape mode (hold smartphone horizontally) If you can’t film yourself, maybe have a friend film you in front of a landmark or your favorite historic building or structure. Be aware of your surroundings (street-level noise, etc.) Check your lighting. If possible, you don’t want to be in an area that is too dark or too bright. Set up your shot (minimize things that might be distracting on screen) We are looking for short clips. Thirty seconds at maximum. Make eye contact, don’t forget to smile.
