Summary of our ESG and governance conversation at Sustainability Bites - it's all about the G. Sustainable Hotel News and Hyatt Place London City East invited industry leaders in hospitality and sustainability to chat about governance in ESG. Here are some key takeaways from the conversation. Thanks to those who came along to offer their thoughts on the big and the little G ! Michael Mason-Shaw, Paul Wells, Anjana Raza, Sarah Duncan, Ufi Ibrahim, Jamie Craze Omnevue World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance Studio Moren Energy & Environment Alliance Sustainability Bites - It's all about the G key takeaways: ✅ There are different types of ways to look at governance – the big G with the box ticking and process for big corporations, and the small G for SMEs fitting in, but all governance matters. And with regards to ESG it will all come down to making sure everyone has the right practices and reporting frameworks in place; 📊 Whether you respond to the carrot or the stick, all sustainability data should be treated as thoroughly as financial data; ⏰ What are we waiting for? Are we waiting for the equivalent of the financial crash for the non-financial data reporting?; 📑 Certifications are currently useful for marketing and communicating sustainable practices, as well as galvanising a team to a common goal, but there needs to be one truth; 🎓 Education is key to the success of governance. We need to better communicate the 'why' of sustainability to the hospitality sector from the bottom to the top; 🎯 Having KPIs and financial remuneration in place around ESG would help hotel teams but few have this system in place. Once hotels have the metrics they can manage the KPIs and it becomes more ingrained. This will eventually happen with ESG; 🗣️ Communication around the business benefits of ESG compliance would be useful; #ESG #sustainability #governance #hotels #reporting #nonfinancialreporting #emissions #data

The recent introduction of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) by the European Union (EU) marks a significant step towards modernizing and strengthening environmental, social governance (ESG) reporting standards, enhancing transparency, and fostering a sustainable global economy. A recent interview with Claire J. of Hotel Management Network and Alina Arnelle, Chief Sustainability Officer of our client BeCause, discusses the substantial impact of the CSRD mandates on businesses operating in the European Union, particularly those in the travel, hospitality, and tourism industries--and how the region is leading the way for standardized sustainability practices. Alina emphasizes the urgency for proactive ESG strategies and transparent reporting across the value chain. As she rightly puts it, "Time is of the essence in this fast world with scarce resources, so there’s no time to wait.” However, this is no easy feat, and many companies struggle with how to even begin with ESG mandate compliance. It all begins with effective sustainability collection and management. Read more of Alina’s insights on how the hotel and tourism industry can navigate ESG mandates and future-proof sustainability data collection and reporting here: https://lnkd.in/eKTmG99h #Sustainability #ESG #CSRD #Leadership #Innovation #HotelManagement

Why is sustainable hospitality becoming the norm, not the exception? The hospitality industry, known for its significant impact on the environment, is rapidly evolving to incorporate sustainability at its core. Here's why sustainable hospitality isn't just a trend but an essential shift that's shaping the future. Here's why sustainable hospitality isn't just a trend but an essential shift that's shaping the future: 1. Consumer Demand: Modern travelers are increasingly eco-conscious, seeking accommodations that align with their values of environmental responsibility. This shift in consumer preference is pushing hotels and resorts to adopt sustainable practices. 2. Corporate Responsibility: More companies are recognizing their part in the global effort to combat climate change. Sustainable hospitality practices contribute to a larger corporate responsibility strategy, enhancing brand image and stakeholder trust. 3. Technological Advances: Innovations in green technology have made it easier and more cost-effective for the hospitality industry to adopt sustainable measures. From solar panels to eco-friendly amenities, technology is paving the way for a greener future. 4. Preservation of Local Communities & Ecosystems: Sustainable practices ensure that tourism benefits, rather than exploits, local communities and natural surroundings. This approach fosters a positive image & long-term viability for both the hospitality providers & the destination they serve. 5. Economic Benefits: Contrary to the belief that sustainability comes at a high cost, many hospitality businesses are discovering that eco-friendly practices can lead to operational savings. Reduced energy consumption, for instance, significantly cuts down on utility expenses. Eager to make your business greener but uncertain about the first steps or the right partner? We, at Hotel Emporium, have the expertise to help you transition smoothly towards sustainability.

The good news in hospitality keeps rolling. Thrilled to share insights from Steve Clements, Director and ESG Lead at Barons Eden - Hotel and Spa Collection, as he discusses the company's inspiring journey towards sustainability in luxury hospitality with HOTEL MANAGEMENT Magazine. 🌟 In 2019, Barons Eden Group recognised that becoming more sustainable wasn’t just an environmental imperative but a sound business decision. It champions a balanced approach, firmly believing that “only profitable businesses can be truly sustainable.” 🔗 Leading by Example Steve's insights offer valuable takeaways for the broader hospitality industry: ➕ Prioritising sustainability as a business imperative: Hotels that fail to prioritise sustainability risk losing business. Consumers are increasingly making informed choices based on a company’s environmental and social responsibility. ➕ Seeking mentorship and collaboration: Partnering with established sustainability organisations can provide valuable guidance and resources for hotels embarking on their sustainability journey. ➕ Embracing technology: Technology can be a powerful tool for hotels looking to improve their sustainability performance. Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism Advisor | Speaker | Podcast Host | Helping hoteliers overcome time and budget barriers to sustainable hotel operations
This is a really great article addressing : >what risk an organization faces by not adopting sustainable hospitality practices. 💡Whether you believe climate change is a threat to your business, or not; we saw what COVID did to supply chains- reason enough to start: procuring and sourcing both employees and products closer to home. There are so many great and impactful program ideas listed: 🌊I love the idea of creating a MPA (marine protected area) around your property if you are near the beach! ❗️One of the most important takeaways: Make your strategy specific and customized to your organization e.g. CAPEX, geography, size etc… 💪🏽Sustainability is not going anywhere and the longer you wait the harder it will be. I realize the demands on hotel management and it seems impossible to find time. 🎬Start with a strategy and implement one initiative at a time. 💥Before you know it, you will create culture, momentum and differentiation around your sustainability efforts👌 👉🏽If you would like some ideas, get in touch:

Hospitality leaders have cited obstacles when it comes to implementing environmental, social and governance initiatives, including varying reporting standards and lack of knowledge about the issues. Some respondents also said that some hospitality stakeholders place greater importance on guest satisfaction than ESG measures. The research engaged 250 hospitality leaders worldwide, all of whom shared thoughts on ESG issues and the key takeaway from the effort was that there are “multiple concerns around the implementation of ESG measures, as well as regional differences in priorities.” #hospitality #ESG #standards #obstacles

I LOVE this big G, little G concept and the bridge between the two. Focussing on the Y (why) in the G is where the magic happens. What an enlightening discussion.
