"We've wanted some sort of centerpiece square gathering area for the community for at least 14–15 years," said Lisa Goldman, City Manager of Burlingame, California. Designed by SWA, the new town square broke ground last week just a 30-minute drive from downtown San Francisco. Transforming a surface parking lot into a multi-purpose space, the project will feature a grove, seating area, cascading water feature, and a stage and plaza able to accommodate a range of programs, from performances to farmer's markets. “I’m very excited about the project, not only that it started, but for what it’s going to be for the city — kind of a destination, a place for people to gather for community events, community gathering," said Burlingame Mayor Peter Stevenson. I've been thinking about how placemaking builds stronger communities. Imagine a park that's not just a place to throw a frisbee, or play fetch with your dog but a hub for neighbours to connect, share meals and collaborate on projects that make the community grow closer. That's the magic of placemaking! This actually happened when a local park went from desolate to delightful. A group of residents started meeting for weekly potlucks, and the energy was contagious! Slowly, through word of mouth, the gathering increased from a mere ten people to hundreds of people getting together every weekend. This simple act of coming together sparked a conversation with the city about revitalizing the space. Now, they're planning a community garden and a recreation area - all designed with input from the people who use it most! Here's the thing: When we design with community in mind, we're not just building structures, we're building trust. Trust between residents and local government, and trust between neighbours themselves. This sense of connection is vital for strong, healthy communities, and it all starts with creating spaces that spark interaction and collaboration. So, what are your thoughts on placemaking? Have you seen any inspiring examples in your own communities? Let me know in the comments! “Less mix” and more residential use, cities and towns are finally startibg to get it, the value and the demand is residential
The good news is that this is still an excellent project that will provide homes for more than 800 individuals and families. And the city will benefit from more the 100,000 square feet of shops and restaurants, along with a village green, the restoration of South Meadow Brook, bike paths and other amenities that will be open to all. https://lnkd.in/eC9wKQRE
