The Baltimore City Department of Public Works Quarantine Road Landfill accepts residential and commercial waste from Baltimore City and the surrounding communities. This municipally-owned and operated site was established in 1985 and is currently in the process of planning an expansion. The expansion project will fill in Quarantine Road to expand onto the closed Millennium Landfill. SWANA CEO/ED Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE, Director of Public Policy Kristyn Oldendorf, and Director of Special Projects James William Swart toured the site and visited with the facility management and staff. They were happy to see that the landfill supervisors were actively using SWANA safety resources, including best practices for backing and the latest Safety First tips. Safety was also on display with the use of PPE and the protection of landfill gas wells, using heavy blocks found onsite. The landfill provides energy to the US Coast Guard yard, located across Quarantine Road. It was also great to see several women working in heavy equipment operator roles, gaining on-the-job experience to grow in their careers! Thank you for hosting us! Join SWANA at WASTECON for many technical sessions on landfills, landfill gas, and safety. The session Landfill Operations Unlocked: Your Questions, Expert Solutions will offer an interactive “ask the landfill manager” forum to share expert insights and practical solutions: https://lnkd.in/eVYrZvrV. #SWANA #WASTECON #Safety #Landfills #LandfillGas #SolidWasteManagement #ResourceManagement

Reuse and repurpose of materials is happening all around us! Repurpose Aggregates in Joppa, Maryland, takes debris from construction, demolition, and excavation (CDE) and sorts it into various sizes and material types. The recovered gravel, stone, clay, and sand is used for various projects in manufacturing, construction, and reclamation. Repurpose Aggregates also uses the recovered material to make new concrete for retaining walls and other structures. This process saves landfill space, conserves natural materials, and activates reuse. SWANA CEO/ED, Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE, SWANA Director of Public Policy, Kristyn Oldendorf, and SWANA Director of Special Projects, James William Swart, toured the site and visited with the facility management. They learned about the technology used to sort the materials. The equipment, made by CDE Global, is so new to North America that this is only the second plant in the US to use it. The equipment uses sorting technology that includes shakers, sorting screens, and a closed loop water system. Thank you Miguel Lambert, Eric Baker, and team for hosting us! To see more reuse and repurposing in action, join SWANA at WASTECON for many technical sessions on the topic! The Coastal Park Facility in Cape Town, South Africa includes a landfill and a materials recovery facility (MRF). SWANA Executive Director/CEO Amy Lestition Burke, MA, FASAE, CAE, Director of Public Policy Kristyn Oldendorf and Past President Art Mercer enjoyed touring the site as part of the ISWA International Solid Waste Association World Congress technical tours. Owned by the City of Cape Town, the landfill accepts waste from the Cape Town region. Built over an old dumpsite, the landfill was built utilizing dynamic compaction and geosynthetic layers. The landfill gas (LFG) collected is utilized to produce all the electricity used onsite. A new MRF was recently built on the campus and will accept single stream recycling from around the area, designed to process 65 metric tons a day, with space to expand. Currently in testing mode, the MRF uses a combination of hand sorting and technology such as eddy currents and magnets. To learn more about landfills, landfill gas, and recycling, join us at WASTECON in Grapevine, Texas. The experiential learning tour of the Republic Services Plano Recycling Center will provide a behind-the-scenes view of recycling in action! #ISWAWorldCongress #SWANA #WASTECON #Recycling #MRF #Landfill #LandfillGas #ResourceRecovery
