📺 What does it take to create a thriving and innovativebiomedical ecosystem? At the #FallingWalls #ScienceSummit24, the Max Delbrück Center joined a panel of experts to explore this vital question. The Round Table discussion focused on how collaboration across research institutions, industry, funders, and healthcare providers should allow ideas to float freely to advance biomedicine. Our Scientific Director, Maike Sander, highlighted Berlin’s potential as a hub for biomedical innovation. Berlin has an extraordinary talent pool who are attracted not only by the city’s vibrancy, she said, but also because of its excellent biomedical research institutions. They have access to cutting-edge technologies to test their ideas. That’s a solid foundation for the innovation pipeline, she added. What other key elements are needed for a successful ecosystem? - Redefine impact: It’s not just about papers and other academic metrics, but includes inventions, IP, spin-offs, etc. - A culture that values risk-taking and entrepreneurship. - Fluidity in networking with the private sector. - Access to data. - Don't let institutional boundaries make it difficult for industry, investors, research institutions, and academic medical centers to work together. - Supportive policies and politicians who prioritize science. The expert panel: Maike Sander (Max Delbrück Center) Juan J. de Pablo (New York University) Dr. Henry Marx (State Secretary, Department for Higher Education and Research, Berlin) Ian Walmsley (Imperial College London) 🎤 Moderated by Dr. Claudia Ulbrich (Cardior Pharmaceuticals) 📽️ Watch the full recording here: https://lnkd.in/dCBjEvw6

Identify, invent, and … implement! 🚦 Those are the three steps of the #Biodesign method developed by Stanford University to come up with innovative solutions for unmet medical needs in healthcare. In their project #Design4Health, young professionals Defne Kincir, Robrecht Abts and Marie Verougstraete applied this method to identify an unmet need at UZ Leuven, for which they invented and – in a next step – will implement a smart and viable solution. Curious about the health-related point of improvement they've spotted? Read all about it in the latest edition of ‘Economie werkt’ by the province of Flemish-Brabant. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXyuWMhH Design4Health is a project by Health House vzw, KU Leuven Research & Development, UZ Leuven and the Faculteit Geneeskunde KU Leuven Faculty of Medicine, with the support of Smart Hub Vlaams-Brabant. #innovation #researchvalorization #LRD
