R404A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant blend commonly employed in various commercial refrigeration systems, including those found in supermarkets, cold storage warehouses, and industrial settings. Unlike some other refrigerants, R404A does not deplete the ozone layer. However, it does possess a notable drawback: a high global warming potential (GWP). The composition of R404A comprises three primary components: 44% R125 (pentafluoroethane), 52% R143a (trifluoroethane), and 4% R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane). Initially, R404A gained popularity as a substitute for ozone-depleting refrigerants such as R22 and R502. Nonetheless, due to its substantial GWP, many regions have initiated phase-outs in favor of more eco-friendly alternatives. These alternatives often include hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) like R448A, R449A, and R452A, which boast significantly lower GWPs.
