With $475 million, we’re accelerating clean energy deployment in America’s mining communities—supporting jobs and economic development in the areas hit hardest by our evolving energy landscape. The five projects in Arizona, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia cover a range of clean energy technologies, from solar, microgrids, and pumped storage hydropower to geothermal & battery energy storage systems. Three projects are on former Appalachian coal mines, which supports economic revitalization and workforce development on land that is no longer viable for industrial purposes. In the West, two projects seek to displace fossil-fuel use by ramping up net-zero mining operations and providing the critical materials needed for a robust, domestic, clean energy supply chain. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding $90 million to a company that has promised to build what would be the largest solar project in the state (402 megawatts) on a former coal mine in central Pennsylvania. The award goes to Delaware-based Mineral Basin Solar LLC, a subsidiary of the Boston-based clean energy developer Swift Current Energy. The energy produced would be enough to power 70,000 homes. The grant is part of the $475 million the department is awarding to projects around the country to promote clean energy on former minelands. Other projects include a pumped hydroelectric storage dam in Kentucky and a solar farm in West Virginia. Funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed by President Biden in 2021. The US Department of Energy has set aside $475 million in funding for five projects seeking to accelerate clean energy development in current and former mine lands. These projects include: - A copper recovery to support the domestic energy supply chain (Arizona) - The Lewis Ridge Project for coal-to-pumped storage hydropower in Kentucky - The decarbonization of gold mines in Nevada - A mineral basin coal-to-solar project in Pennsylvania - A coal-to-solar project in West Virginia. The WA energy transition is starting to accelerate - especially where network access, land access or regulatory approvals are less of an issue as this Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) article by Jarrod Lucas and Tara De Landgrafft highlights.   An increasing number of regional towns, remote communities, mine camps and mine sites are making the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy to improve security, reliability, reduce costs and reduce emissions. For miners to move, the business case must be compelling. We're thrilled to announce that our recent project submission and partnership with Penn-State's Repurposing Center for Energy Transition (ReCET) in the College of Earth & Mineral Sciences, and Dr. Arash Dahi Taleghani, Director, who has been involved in repurposing abandoned mine projects with NETL and Mineral Basin projects, was selected for $100,000 in funding. We look forward to getting started on this work in the Fall once all of our grant paperwork is recieved and completed. We will be reaxhing out to our Coalition partners in Schuylkill County when the ball starts rolling. Dr. Taleghani has expertise in geothermal, well engineerinf, and thermal analysis. Dr. Zhen Lei, Associate Director of ReCET is an energy and environmental economist that will be working with EPCAMR as well given his expertise in economics, social, and community impact assessment of similar projects in PA. We'll be taking a much closer look at the decommissioned Wheelabrator Co-Gen Plant and surrounding Morea Mine Complex. Evaluating the potential for remediation of the mine pools will address long-standing health and safety issues that could improve downstream regional water quality of AMD in the Mill Creek watershed, a headwater tributary to the Upper Schuylkill River Headwaters. Utilization of clean, renewable energy could minimize the environmental footprint of energy, marking a pivotal step towards sustainability. Thinking outside of the box to evaluate the feasibility of using Anthracite Region flooded water-filled stripping pits that are manifestations of the mine pools as we like to say, in combination with floating solar for heating and cooling is a novel approach. We'll be taking a closer look at the Morea Mine Pool Complex in Frackville, PA to cool data centers and store thermal energy in conjunction with a new solar farm. Funding from Just Transition Fund had allowed EPCAMR to build new partnerships and ans supported our organization to pursue some of these federal grant opportunties being funded in coalfield communities by the various Interagency Working Group federal agencies, like the DOE that align with their mission of net-zero emissions and a just energy transition. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service provided supplemental guidance on the domestic content bonus credit.   The guidance revises the previously provided safe harbor table to: (i) include hydropower and pumped hydropower storage facilities (ii) revise the approach for solar projects to explicitly include ground-mount and rooftop photovoltaic systems (iii) provide additional manufactured product components for certain applicable projects.    Learn more from our Renewables Tax team: https://lnkd.in/ggee4JsW #energytransition #inflationreductionact #taxcredits 

More exciting guidance from the IRS about the IRA, this time on the Domestic Content Bonus credit! Glad to have new guidance that makes it easier for projects to qualify for these bonus credits.

Areas of the U.S. that once hosted coal mines and fossil fuel power plants are now turning to #CleanEnergy. Among the challenges posed by the transition to zero-carbon energy is the fate of “energy communities” that had historically depended on coal, oil, or gas industries. Such regions represent 18.6% of the U.S. population. However, since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), they have received 36.8% of all clean energy investment nationwide, according to findings from Rhodium Group and Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. It adds up to $37 billion in #investment for energy communities in one year. This trend is spurned on by incentives in the IRA, which are intended to leverage clean energy development to rejuvenate “energy community” economies and provide a pathway to the green economy for former coal, oil, and gas workers. As these areas turn to #renewables, it may mark a shift in middle America’s views on clean energy.
