As someone deeply invested in property management and client satisfaction, I view Hong Kong’s plastic ban as pivotal. As a pioneer in #sustainable real estate, we're proactively adapting our practices at ARTHALAND to stay ahead of industry trends while remaining true to our mission. HK’s ban targeting single-use plastics like straws and utensils, echoes the challenges we encounter in the Philippines, where local government units (LGUs) have varied approaches to similar issues. It’s helpful seeing how other Asian countries are dealing with issues in sustainable development. It allows me to understand what could possibly happen next, and how we might be able to deal with the situation. For example, customer feedback from Hong Kong highlights concerns about the increased costs and inconvenience of eco-friendly alternatives. To address these issues, exploring options like bulk purchasing of sustainable supplies and adding on-site cleaning stations could enhance convenience and affordability. These steps aim to reduce inconvenience and maintain affordability for tenants, lessees, and clients. Amazing news! Hong Kong will see a ban on many single-use plastic items this coming April. It is amazing how quickly some legislation can be passed. The first stage of the ban will include all foamed polystyrene tableware, plastic plates, straws, stirrers and cutlery, as well as plastic cups and food containers for dine in in April 2024. Other items which will disappear are disposable plastic umbrella bags, glow sticks, plastic toothpicks and cotton buds to name a few. And say goodbye to the free tissue packs from the corner store, that is unless they switch from a plastic wrap to another material. We need to see a switch to reusables and not simply to non-plastic materials if we want to address the huge and growing waste problem in Hong Kong. So remember to BYO cup, container and cutlery and keep an eye out for the reusable food and beverage container programmes which are becoming more common across the city. BEC welcomes the long-awaited HKSAR Government’s ban on the supply or display of disposable plastic tableware and some other plastic products starting from 22 April 2024, a key step towards realising Hong Kong’s “Zero Landfill” vision as set out in the Waste Blueprint for Hong Kong 2035.   To ensure a smooth transition, BEC advises the Government to provide more detailed implementation guidelines with specific approaches and specifications of viable alternatives for the business sector. We also urge the Government to actively support reusable tableware schemes with reference to successful examples in nearby countries or regions such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. A milestone day to celebrate for #HongKong on Earth Day 2024 - when all Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) tableware, as well as plastic straws, stirrers, forks, knifes, spoons and plates are now banned. As well hotels will not be able to provide plastic containers for toiletries, including plastic bottled water. Whilst under this phase plastic cups and food containers may still be sold and used for take-away, they will remain banned for dine-in purposes. And the much maligned umbrella bags will also be banned. A step in the right direction - but still a long way to go, Hong Kong. This is ... a 1970s approach to a problem that's been ballooning ever since. It's quite an interesting ( material sciences + public policy ) problem ... how could the use of (i) plastics in (ii) food and beverage packaging (iii) be zero-ed (iv) for a geographical region (v) quickly (vi) in one abstract step?

Hong Kong will ban single-use plastic on April 22, symbolically on Earth Day. Thanks to The Sustainable Restaurant Association for this guide. The timeframe to comply for businesses is challenging, but I believe that the ecological benefits outweigh temporary discomfort. Now that plastic containers will be banned for takeaway meals too, we are urgently addressing the challenges with our grab & go concept at 1880 Hong Kong. Following this guide, I agree that the best solution is to encourage guests to bring their own takeaway boxes and plates. This could be done by providing some initial incentives for the guests - with stamp cards or discounts. The second phase will kick off in 2025, extending the ban to takeaway orders. My two cents 🤔🤔🤔 I lived in HK for 18-months - amazing city, all business, fast paced and BIG singe use consumer. When bold initiatives like the above are approved, HK moves forward - and this will be NO different. A 2-year phase to remove single use across F&B and hotels will require buy in from consumers, investment from the public sector and significant support/funding for reusables and single use alternatives. In the west, an aggressive program like this will take decades to implement, and be met with resistance along the way. HK has a get things done attitude, it'll be interesting to see the progress and response - but confident in Hong Kong's ability to move forward and set an example for other regions.
