3 questions for Dieter Overath - Former Fairtrade International CEO and Senior Advisor at UNIDO At the recent osapiens conference, we spoke to Dieter Overath about integrating #sustainability into global supply chains. 💡Here are three key insights: 1️⃣ How can companies implement the #LkSG in a meaningful way? ‘Data and transparency are important, but they are not the end goal,’ emphasises Overath. ‘The real purpose is to improve conditions in the Global South.’ He warns that companies must think beyond compliance and bring about concrete improvements on the ground. 2️⃣ How can real #impact be achieved? Overath's appeal is clear: ‘If you don't want to save the world, save your own supply chains.’ He calls on companies to invest in sustainable, fair structures - not only for ethical reasons, but also to secure their own business foundations in the long term. 3️⃣ How do we ensure the #effectiveness of #measures? ‘We need measurable success parameters,’ criticises Overath. ‘The focus must be on concrete improvements in the Global South, not on the number of reports or completed forms.’ He argues in favour of consistent measurement of effectiveness - both for corporate measures and for legislation itself. 🤞 💫 Overath's conclusion gives cause for hope: he observes that companies are increasingly recognising the need to actively initiate change through in-depth knowledge of their supply chains. An important first step towards more sustainable and fairer global economic structures. #POTS #partofthesolution #fairtrade #sustainablesupplychain #SoS24

At the #WorldCocoaConference in Brussels last month we exchanged ideas and insights with many different actors of the cocoa sector all over the world. Living income for farmers was the main focus, but to reach this objective, we need to clear out a lot of other issues on deforestation and new regulations, on unpredictable price fluctuations and good agricultural practices, on power relations and international cooperation
🌐 At the end of April, cocoa stakeholders from around the world gathered in Brussels for the #WorldCocoaConference to discuss the biggest challenges facing the sector. The main focus: a #livingincome for cocoa farmers. 🤎 For our cocoa experts in attendance, it was an excellent opportunity to nurture existing relationships and forge new partnerships for a more sustainable cocoa sector. 🗣️🌟 Our colleague johanna renckens, who is currently leading the European Union-funded #CREA project in Ecuador, took part in a panel discussion on how we can strengthen global collaboration across the sector. She shares 4 insights. 1️⃣ Common objectives between all actors in the sector are especially important for global cooperation. 2️⃣ Joint learning is key to create sustainable collaboration in the long term. Piloting small initiatives that test how to tackle important challenges in the sector are an essential contribution to this learning. 3️⃣ If we want to develop viable and effective proposals, we need to establish horizontal relationships between all stakeholders of the cocoa sector. We also need to address the power relations between the different actors. 4️⃣ To address the current challenges in the sector, we need a more global, international vision of the sector. FAIR TRADE ALERT - Frans post on hold for a few days. Fair Trade Scotland closed on 31st July 2024. Fair Trade Scotland was set up in 2006, as a WFTO mission-led Social Business, Limited By Guarantee, having NO shareholders and NO charitable status. . We were Scotland's first WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade Importer Member and actively promoted the WFTO Verification System in a 'Fair Trade' Nation, that was 'founded' on the basis of the Fairtrade Certification System. We actively promoted the WFTO Verification System, as a driver, in promoting the Principles and Values needed to inform and educate consumers that change really is possible through Responsible Consumption. Traditionally Fair Trade has always operated in the charity/not for profit sector and to this day remains a ‘feel good’ purchase as a way to tackle Trade Injustice. Breaking traditional ties with the Charity Sector is needed, as to be sustainable you need to be profitable and therein lies the problem. . Whilst we have decided to terminate our membership with WFTO, we will continue to promote WFTO Producer Members, who really need support to access the Scottish/UK market, by promoting the WFTO First Buyer Label. Our FTS Website will still be visible for history. https://lnkd.in/gHUDckFZ
We are delighted to announce the prestigious panel who will reassess Scotland's status as a Fair Trade Nation. With a wide range of knowledge, expertise and perspectives, we have: ➡️ Karen Smith (Chair), Social Auditor ➡️ Sir Geoff Palmer, Emeritus Professor at Heriot-Watt University and human rights activist ➡️ Eliane Reid, Programme Lead at University of Edinburgh and former Assistant Chief Executive of Volunteer Scotland ➡️ Roopa Mehta, President of the World Fair Trade Organization ➡️ Professor Anne Tallontire, Sustainability Research Institute, University of Leeds ➡️ Mary Kinyua, Former Chair of Fairtrade Africa and Fairtrade International Delegate to COP26
