What actions can you take today to continue Mary Lou Byler's legacy? 1. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the history, culture, and current issues facing Indigenous communities. Share this knowledge. Encourage your local libraries and schools to include more Native American authors and histories in their collections. Do not allow erasure. 2. Support Indigenous-led Organizations: Donate time, money, or resources to organizations led by Indigenous people that focus on advocacy, education, and cultural preservation. Examples include the National Congress of American Indians, the Native American Rights Fund, the Association on American Indian Affairs, and local tribal organizations. 3. Promote Authentic Representation: Seek out and support media that accurately represents Indigenous cultures and stories. This includes films, television shows, books, and art that are created by or feature Native American creators. Challenge inaccurate portrayals and demand better representation. 4. Learn About and Honor Tribal Sovereignty: Recognize and respect the unique status of Native American nations as sovereign entities. Understand the treaties and agreements that have been made with these nations and how they affect their current status and rights. Seek out the truth beyond propaganda. 5. Vote and Advocate for Policies Affecting Indigenous Communities: Ensure you are registered to vote and stay informed about candidates' stances on Indigenous issues. Support legislative efforts that recognize sovereignty over ancestral lands and ensure clean water access for reservations. Use your voice and be an ally.
We mourn the loss of Mary Lou Gloyne Byler, a citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, with her relatives, friends, colleagues and Nation. Mary Lou was a trailblazer in Native literature and advocacy, co-editing key works and championing Native rights. Her legacy at the Association and beyond will be deeply missed.

This week is an important beginning of idealistic views of who we are as a people. Wednesday is the celebration of the same date in 1865 when the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. The potential idealism that fueled some during that moment as they headed into a new territory of freedom is overwhelming to imagine. Their dreams of freedom went from feeling like a fantasy to a possibility. And in just over two weeks, we will be celebrating the freedom and independence of our country from another power of dominance and oppression. Back then, there were sets of ideals and principles of a free nation that the founding Americans were willing to die for. But there are similarities in both instances. The days we mark as June 19th and July 4th are worth celebrating, but upon reflection, they also generate a reflection of all the action that was required then and is required now. At a team meeting this morning, there was an interesting ice breaker. Would you rather meet your great, great grandparents or your great, great grandchildren. Put into the context of these next two dates of celebration, I am not sure what would be more enlightening; bringing my great, great grandparents to now or my great, great grandchildren. What would they think of where we are, and the progress we have (and haven't made)? While there will be reminders of the divisiveness over the next two weeks, I plan to reflect with my family and three kids on all that has been accomplished. I plan to re-teach the ideals of what can be for all of us when we care about our fellow citizens and believe in the better world ahead of us. Happy Juneteenth Week, everyone.

Mother's Day is not a time to celebrate for many people. Many of us have lost our mothers through death, others never knew their mothers at all because they were adopted or some other issue. There are many moms and grandmothers who are incredibly sad on mothers day due to the death of a child, alienation, miscarriage, abortion or even custody arrangements. How do we celebrate a day that may bring so much pain? Mother's day isn't all about blood relatives. It is about loving those who have been positive influences to us all. If you don't have a mom, let that woman in your life who has been there for you know that they make a difference. If your kids aren't with you reach out and let them know you are glad to be a mom and if you can't do that then be there for someone who doesn't have a mom. Also... I want to offer you 3 Things to share with someone for mothers day that could change their life. 1) Join us fo rour Mother's Day Sober Celebration for those women who are choosing to stay sober this Mother's Day. 2) Invite someone, or join our free 5-Day Mindful Sobriety Challenge for Women of Faith who may be sober curious. It offers a ton of information and support to those who may need help to kick the habit.
