Great day kicking off the 15th annual California Climate and Energy Forum #CCEC24 in the City of Palm Springs with CivicWell CEO Bernadette Austin. In Palm Springs, like entire Coachella Valley, our economy and our way of life depend on our ability to mitigate climate change as much as possible both here at home and with our partner cities and organizations. We also need to continue to adapt to the climate changes we’re already seeing, especially to protect our vulnerable residents. All our plans – from our airport master plan to our parks master plan and our zoning code update – are informed by ever-increasing heat. We inherently understand the importance of a Sustainability, a value instilled by the Agua Caliente tribe thousands of years ago and carried forward by our Desert Modernist architects. Our primary economic driver, tourism, is inherently seasonal. Climate change threatens to shorten our tourist season, which could result in a devastating 20% reduction in revenue. We have achieved some great milestones, but we have a long way to go. The City of Palm Springs is committed to reaching carbon neutrality in line with the state’s 2045 target. That’s a challenge given our tourism based economy. We reached our 2020 goal, matching our 1990 emission levels…..and on time! One of the projects I’m most proud of is introducing our community choice aggregator, called Desert Community Energy which primarily offers a carbon-free electricity option. Over 70% !!!! of Palm Springs electricity customers choose the carbon-free offering. This in itself contributes to roughly a 17% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions. Together, we can improve and implement zero waste, low carbon transportation, safe and healthy buildings, heat safety, water management, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced technology and move forward with a true carbon-neutral economy/society.

Our partners at Urban Ocean Lab have newly released the "Climate Readiness Framework for Coastal Cities" with over 70 climate recommendations that aims to help coastal cities meet this critical moment. Their recommendations span 5 key themes: coastal ecosystems, offshore renewable energy, infrastructure, community resilience, and climate-driven relocation. If acted upon, these recommendations will enable U.S. coastal cities to better adapt to and manage climate risks; create good, green jobs and a trained workforce; build healthier and more equitable communities; and safeguard the lives of their more than 65 million residents. The Village and its Environment & Energy Commission are seeking feedback about current transportation options in #OakPark, and more specifically about whether an electric shuttle could help meet people's transportation needs. An online survey is available at https://lnkd.in/g7ueJCTJ. Climate Ready Oak Park, the community’s climate, sustainability and resilience plan, includes a goal to shift from personal vehicles to active transportation and transit. One of the high-impact actions identified under this goal is to assess the feasibility of reintroducing the Oak Park shuttle with an all-electric fleet. Feedback gathered from the survey will help shape future policymaking around this issue.
