Climate change is real and today is driven by human industrial and economic activity. There's nothing fake about the lives being lost or properties destroyed. So long as built environments (structures of all types, functions, sizes and locations) are treated by the property development and banking sectors as little more than real estate commodities from which profits are to be fextracted, the greater the damage and risks will be. We've all seen the piles of matchwood heaped up after massive storms and floods - caused by human-induced climate change AND poor quality, built-on-the-cheap and incredibly wasteful construction methods & technologies. When we continue to build as if each building was a largely a hand-made, poorly crafted prototype that never goes into production, all we do is increase risks and make affordable insurance a pipe dream. Built environments aren't ornamental - they're fundamental to human well-being,prosperity and livability and thus play a profound public health role. When buildings are relegated to profit-making commodities to the exclusion of all other criteria, lives are put at great risk as we are seeing daily across the planet.
