This discussion on Africa’s bid for permanent seats on the UN Security Council raises critical points about both opportunity and responsibility. Ambassador Martin Kimani’s insights into the long journey toward this goal, as well as the nuanced debate around whether an unprepared African state could handle the burdens of such a role, are incredibly timely. The metaphor of “strutting peacocks to plucked chickens” aptly captures the complexity of Africa’s geopolitical aspirations—marked by ambition, pride, and the challenge of managing the reality of a prominent international position. While the pursuit of greater representation in global governance is undeniably important, it is equally vital to consider the preparation required for such a role. Leadership on the world stage entails not just the prestige of being a decision-maker, but also the immense responsibility of steering global outcomes, which requires robust institutions, diplomacy, and strategic foresight. As Africa’s rise in international diplomacy continues to gather momentum, it is essential that the continent not only secures a seat at the table but also equips itself with the tools to navigate the complex world of international relations. While the road to securing permanent seats on the UN Security Council is long, it could also be a transformative opportunity for Africa to reshape its role in global governance, influencing both policy and the broader narrative around international cooperation. This episode of The Afropolitan offers an important reflection on what it takes to ascend to such a position—and the nuances of how to be ready when it’s time to lead. It’s a conversation worth engaging with for anyone interested in the intersection of geopolitics, international relations, and Africa’s evolving role in global governance. #AfricaInGlobalGovernance #UNSecurityCouncil #StrategicLeadership #InternationalRelations #GlobalCooperation #AfricanDiplomacy

Saw this episode contextualizing relevant touch points on how open governance can be implemented in the global south. It has a particularly interesting angle identifying how our culture, especially in Africa, may tend to hinder open governance. Interesting conversation really! As an advocate for open data in virtually any industry like finance and urban development, the government and its institutions can be such a model to extend "openness/transparency."
