EUROPA FILES E20 Since we think Europa may be able to support alien life, we do not want to contaminate it with Earth life. There is something called Planetary Protection, which is two sided. One side is to protect Earth from potential “space bugs” or hazards. This is why the Apollo 11 astronauts were quarantined when they landed back on Earth and why Mars Sample Return is such a challenge. The other side is not accidentally putting any “earth bugs” out in space where there could be alien life, like Europa. We don’t want to find life somewhere and have it accidentally be the life we brought with us. So Europa Clipper is going through many cleaning and sanitizing processes to eliminate the Earth bugs in everything from manufacturing to assembly. #europa #europaclipper #europafiles #europaicebath #europaphile

Plant (#Green) #Chambers on the Moon: As part of the #Artemis III mission, astronauts will establish “#growth #chambers” on the Moon to cultivate various plant species, including “#duckweed (view image) and #thale #cress”. These plants are chosen for their ability to adapt to the #lunar #environment and their potential as #sustainable #food sources. This initiative is part of the upcoming #2026 Artemis III #mission, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. Duckweed #prevents #infection of the airways, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, and other conditions.

Mission Atlantis under the Astroland organization in Santander Spain is complete! I served as Commander and we succeeded with flying colors! I’m also the 1st African American Commander to serve as Commander on this project. #blackhistory My team was put together beautifully with each one of us supporting in our specialties and assigned roles to the T. Our team consisted of 4 ambitious astronauts in training picked from 4 different continents. Representing the U.S./Mexico, Morrocco, Chile and UK Our mission was rigorous, it required witt, extreme determination, athleticism, comrodory, discipline and a vision that we all saw to make it happen. The circumstances tested many of my beliefs, ideas and triggers which allowed me to grow as a leader, astronaut in training and human. I don’t realize exactly what I am getting myself into but I have a great idea on where we’re headed. This one’s for the believers, the misfits, the bold, brave and ambitious. We’ve all looked up at the stars and dreamed of exploring the unknown. But how often do we think about what we’re leaving behind as we reach for the cosmos? Today, I’m happy to share an article I co-authored with Prabhat Pani, titled "Earth’s Orbit: A Junkyard with a Billion-Dollar View?" published in The CSR Journal. Space sustainability isn’t a topic that gets much attention, but it’s one we need to start discussing now. Our article sheds light on the growing issue of orbital debris and the urgent need for responsible exploration. If we don’t act, our dreams of the stars could quickly turn into a nightmare of space junk. There isn't one easy answer, but it comes down to money, politics and priorities. Let's start with the money. Yes, the Apollo missions were enormously successful — and enormously expensive. At its peak, NASA was consuming around 5% of the entire federal budget, and more than half of that was devoted to the Apollo program. Accounting for inflation, the entire Apollo program would cost over $260 billion in today's dollars. OTD in 1969 the lunar module (Snoopy) for the Apollo 10 mission came within 7.8 nautical miles of the lunar surface during a full dress rehearsal for the upcoming Apollo 11 mission. Aviation legends Gene Cernan, Tom Stafford, and John Young were the astronauts on this mission. All 3 have been recognized for their achievements by the National Aeronautic Association. Gene Cernan and Tom Stafford are recipients of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy (2007 and 2011 respectively). John Young as part of STS-1 and the development of the space shuttle in 1981 received recognition as a Collier recipient. Some fun facts about Apollo 10 and the crew: ✨ Snoopy's approach to the moon was the closest approach before the actual landing by Apollo 11 ✨ Apollo 10 was the first mission to broadcast color television signal from space ✨ Apollo 10 set the record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned vehicle. The spacecraft hit 24,791 mph during its return to Earth. ✨ John Young holds the current ratified FAI record for duration of stay on the surface of the celestial body at 71 h 02 min 13 sec (Apollo 16) ✨ Eugene Cernan is the last person to walk on the moon and holds the current ratified FAI record for distance covered on board a vehicle on the surface of the celestial body at 4.5 miles and extravehicular duration on the surface of the celestial body by an astronaut at 21 h 31 min 44 sec (Apollo 17 mission) Do you know an aviation pioneer and legend? Did you know that a footprint on the Moon could last for millions of years? Unlike Earth, the Moon has no atmosphere, which means there is no wind or water to erode or wash away the footprint. The only factors that could affect it are micrometeorite impacts and the slight movement of lunar soil caused by thermal expansion or contraction. As a result, footprints left by astronauts during the Apollo missions are still intact and may remain that way for a very long time. 🌕👣 #Moon #SpaceExploration #ApolloMission

Humans can not only theoretically drink that moon waterThey can also split off oxygen atoms to create breathable air. But first, astronauts will need a way to turn ice into liquid water.
