The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) recently reported that 239 companies had their “commitment removed” on the SBTi dashboard SBTi uses to track corporate net-zero goals. As of this writing, there are 4,950 companies with approved targets in the SBTi database. This large number of lost commitments comes from the SBTi policy announced last year that gave companies 24 months to submit science-based targets for validation once a "commitment" is made. The first wave of companies that had their status changed hit on January 31st. Expect more “commitment removed” messages from the SBTi in the near future. #climatechange #SBTi

Yesterday, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) published four technical outputs as part of its process to revise the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard. We encourage all stakeholders - especially climate-leading companies with Scope 3 emissions reduction goals - to read SBTi’s materials and engage with them on a path toward updated Scope 3 guidance. Scroll below for some initial insights and quotes from ZEMBA President and CEO Ingrid Irigoyen and Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) CEO Kim Carnahan. #Scope3 #SBTi #CarbonAccounting

🌍 We endorse the new decision taken by Science Based Targets initiative! 🌎 #SBTi has decided to extend its scope of #marketbased decarbonization by allowing reporting companies to retire carbon credits. 🌎 This development is expected to further boost the hashtag #VCM whose growth previously projected to increase by 25 to 125 times as per different recognized authorities. You may reach out to us to get detailed info about the rule update!

Is this the final nail in the coffin that SBTi has become now? It will be a good case study for history (should there be a future left) of how ambitious and correct targets were reduced to impossible numbers and two sides so obstinate (and also kind of correct) that no one budged and now the people and planet will suffer as a consequence. What's the BATNA here? How is it better than what's happening? Where is the common ground? Obviously, VCMs have lost a lot of credibility because these very brands have abused it every chance they got, but then what's SBTi's solution for it? The numbers they have given are simply unachievable without a top-down left-right overhaul of how all of these organizations think- which has so many factors determining its play- some under the brand's control and some completely out of it. Just having SBTi without any of the other things has made the SCIENCE BASED TARGETS look like an achievable joke- which is just a lose lose for everybody.
SBTi has no plans to validate voluntary carbon credit use towards corporate emissions targets The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) will not bow to pressure and validate the use of voluntary carbon credits to help a company achieve its emission targets, the body confirmed to Carbon Pulse. The stance leaves the SBTi clashing with the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) that is trialling a ‘flexi’ claim that allows companies to use carbon credits towards a portion of their Scope 3 targets out to 2035 in a phased-out manner. Other voluntary carbon market participants have also been lobbying the SBTi to change its tune. Read our coverage in full 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZe2ciEw
