Our Head of Discovery and President of the EFMC - European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Luc Van HIJFTE, recently participated in the Global Mentoring Conference. This Korean initiative gathers the young scientist community to learn about gaining experience from international appointments. Such interactions with the younger community are very close to Luc's heart, as he recognizes the importance of helping young scientists take the first steps in their careers. They represent the future of crucial endeavors to create the next generation of therapeutic solutions. #Symeres #Mentoring

On 10 November 2023 we had a mentor-mentee session. Where us, mentee need to meet up with our mentor at least twice a semester. We had our first meet up session on that day. Our mentor, Prof Madya Ir Dr Sariah Binti Abang, is from Miri, Sarawak. Dr brings us for a lunch during our first session together. First thing we talked about was getting to know each other. Dr is very keen to know our background and where we study before getting into UNIMAS pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering. After that we asked Dr about her background which she explained with details to us, for bachelor degree Chemical Engineering at UKM, master in Biochem Engineering at Birmingham University (UK), PHD at Oniris, France. Next, we asked Dr for advice that she can give to first year undergraduates. Dr mainly talked about maintaining our CGPA because one semester drop will drag down other semester results. Dr also talked about adjustment. Where we need to adjust to our surroundings and lecturer. Dr highlights that not everything will go in our way so we need to adjust to it. Moreover, socialising is very important. As the pressure in university is different we need social support. The main focus that Dr highlighted is knowing all the learning outcomes as we will be assessed by it. This session is very helpful for me in terms of studying as Dr very kindly explained about what we had to do to be successful. It was a meaningful meeting! 👩🎓 💖

Chemistry was a thorn in my flesh! Back in high school, chemistry and I had a bit of a "disagreement". It was the one subject consistently keeping me from the top spot in class! So when I got into medical school, and acing #chemistry became mission-critical, I was determined to surmount my struggles. That was when I stumbled upon a simple yet powerful technique: positive #affirmations. Every day, I started telling myself, "I love chemistry!" It might sound a bit unconventional, but this mantra soon became my secret weapon. I repeated it several times a day. At the end of the semester, I achieved an A in chemistry! I couldn’t believe it. But let me clarify, there's no magic involved. I attribute my success to the power of positive affirmations and a growth mindset which led me to take action; to study harder, seek out tutorials, and join study groups. This approach does not only apply to academics; it's how I tackle challenges in life. By maintaining a positive mindset, I embrace problems and immerse myself in discovering innovative solutions. What challenges are you tackling right now? Whether it's mastering a new skill, navigating a complex project, or filling a knowledge gap, remember: a little positivity can unlock your full potential! #positivemindset #lifelonglearning #growthmindset #ElevateYourProfessionalPresenceWith_Amaka Amaka Ifeduba

A Humbling Lesson in Complacency(OVERCONFIDENCE) I still remember my high school days, where I excelled in Chemistry and earned the nickname "ABABIO"., I was the overall best graduating student in chemistry. Fast forward to university, I thought I had it all figured out. "Chemistry? No problem, I've got this!" But, I made a critical mistake - I didn't study for my exams, thinking my past success would carry me through. And, I failed. Woefully. That experience taught me a valuable lesson: complacency has no place in growth. No matter how skilled or knowledgeable you are, every new level requires preparation and effort. Don't assume you know it all. Stay humble, stay hungry, and always be ready to learn and adapt. #LessonLearned #ComplacencyKills #GrowthMindset #Chemistry #UniversityLife"
