Reviewing the Literature Addressing Cardiovascular Disparities in the LGBTQ+ Community Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., with social drivers of health significantly influencing outcomes. For the LGBTQ+ community, which makes up about 7.1% of the U.S. population, the burden of CVD is disproportionately high compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. Unique health risks and a lack of comprehensive research contribute to these disparities. Efforts to understand and mitigate these issues are crucial. The American Heart Association has taken steps to outline research gaps and provide frameworks for enhancing LGBTQ+ cardiovascular health equity. This focus on specialized care and research is vital in tackling the physiological impacts of minority stress and improving health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals across the nation. As healthcare professionals, we must advocate for and implement strategies that address these disparities, ensuring equitable healthcare access and treatment for all.
