To make sure all our interns get the most of their experience, we asked Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Alison Nasisi, along with three former interns now full-time colleagues, what advice they have for our Class of 2024 interns. Internships, when well executed can be tools that elevate your impact with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This isn't just about paying your interns well, either. That's the bare minimum. Not everyone has access to a car to arrive on time or a budget for nice clothing to match the corporate aesthetic. However, one of the best ways to influence upward mobility is relationships. As interns - they have less to lose and more to gain by building relationships with each other and staying connected. In addition to making sure your program is less about cleaning out the file cabinets and more about building basic skills that make them viable for entry level roles... teach your interns how to network in a fashion that cultivates depth of relationship - not just quantities. I made that mistake as a rookie intern. By the 4th internship I realized collecting the name or business card of every lost soul I encountered in the elevator wasn't going to cut it. There is perhaps no more important mission in the gas markets than to expose young people to the nature and importance of energy security, natural gas' critical role in carbon emissions reduction, support for America's Allies around the globe for energy access, use of a native US resource to support a manufacturing renaissance here in the US...the list goes on.
