What I learned from a NYC Doorman A while back, I read a line in a book that struck me - if the job of a NYC doorman was just opening and closing doors they would have been replaced by automatic doors years ago. But that's not the value. We love a doorman as they help with packages, make us feel safe, give us a smile with a good morning, the hand-holding when you need it - the human desire we all have to not feel alone. I feel the same way about matching versus connecting. Algorithms can recommend great potential match ideas - whether this person might be considered for that investment, job, board role, date, whatever it might be. But making that more than a "first date", making that a valued connection which leads to a relationship, to impact, to feeling supported...that requires something else. Understanding you. Understanding them. Curating the connection. Putting a stamp on why this makes sense. Banff knows who matters to you. High valued connections lead to relationships which lead to personal ecosystems of support.

Owners: "Nobody wants to join the trades......" Young folks: “I don’t have enough experience to get a construction job.” I’ve heard both sides of the story. And I’m siding with the young guns on this post… I came across this post recently (screenshot). It’s a young business owner writing this. They’re already making money, wanting to leave it all to join the trades. He's using his free time to get OSHA-30 certified and trying to find a way to get his foot in the door. The guy is HUNGRY! And it’s what we all look for in our industry. But before you say, "nobody is joining the trades." Remember this post. They're out there. And when they show up knocking on your door… Don’t turn them down because they’re “too green.” Believe it or not… I’ve talked to construction business owners that hired folks from McDonald’s and Starbucks eager to learn. And they go on to become one of their best employees. With that being said… Be the person who hires for hunger and attitude. Don't be the person who wants 78yrs of experience and blames it on "nobody wanting to join the trades". We (the industry) must become a better bridge between the desire to join the trades and the path to making that a reality. Hiring the person that has the attitude of "I'll figure it out" (even if they're a bit green) will become a great asset. Open the door. Become the solution. #trades #construction #hammr

SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO SAY NO. NO PARKING! NOT 5 MINUTES. NOT 30 SECONDS. NOT AT ALL! That’s pretty direct, right? Read that and you know where you stand. Sometimes managers need to be as direct with their direct reports. It’s well known that kids will test their parents and that the kids want limits. Staff can be the same. They are mature, yes, and have enough life experiences that give them a certain wisdom, true, but they still need (and want) to know the rules and the boundaries. This is not to say that they cannot be creative and innovative. This is not to say that they must march in lockstep to the commands of the officers. No, by all means, no. But, some things are not up to them. Some ethical things, for example. Some financial things. Some things related to values and mission. If you want a happy and productive staff, give them freedom to innovate. Give them a voice. Help them become the best people they can be. But, also tell them, “These are the things you can’t do.” NO PARKING.

#SandsSpotlight Get to know our purchasing manager Nathan! How did you become interested in construction? My dad has been in the industry since I was a kid, and I was always fascinated by the process. We still do projects together today! How many states have you visited in the United States? I have visited 14 states. If you weren’t in construction, what would you be doing? I would probably be in computer science or neuroscience. What is your favorite vacation spot? My favorite vacation spot is Ocean Isle Beach, NC. What is your favorite sports team? My favorite sports team is the South Carolina Gamecocks! Do you have a secret talent? I play guitar and piano. Name a superpower you wish you had. If I had a superpower, I would want it to be time travel. Is there a book that has changed/assisted in the way you do your job? Founder at Stanley Cowton International | Passionate Recruiter | Niche & Executive Recruitment | GMP & Chemicals | FMCG | Life Sciences | Food & Beverage | CPG | Networker | Connector | Coffee Lover
😔 I used to think back-to-back meetings meant I was being super productive. 😔 ⛔ I WAS WRONG! ⛔ Since starting Stanley Cowton International, I've been working on quality rather than quantity. 💡 Now I leave a 15 minute buffer between every call. This means I can complete any tasks from the call, or at least schedule time to compete them. It also gives me time to make sure I'm prepared for my next call. 💡 🙏 It's such a small change but it's made a huge difference for me. 🙏 Free tip for you 😜 In the words of Kevin McCallister, "Merry Christmas you filthy Animals!". #productivity #worksmarternotharder #productivitytips #recruitment #recruiter
