Digital Product Passport (DPP), is an initiative by the European Commission and is a part of the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) proposed in the Sustainable Product Regulation in March 2022. Plooto’s working model targets by fixing, reusing or recycling, as well as decreasing the need of extraction of raw materials in order to create new products. It targets how products are designed, promotes circular economy processes, encourages sustainable consumption, and aims to ensure that waste is prevented and the resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible. The solution will be piloted in three different circular supply chains demonstrating waste reduction, reusability of scrap and production by-products, operational improvement. As we continue to prioritize sustainability, the recycling industry is undergoing significant transformations. Here are some key trends shaping the future of recycling: Advanced Sorting Technologies: AI and machine learning are revolutionizing recycling facilities. According to a report by the National Waste & Recycling Association, AI-driven systems can increase sorting accuracy by up to 50%, reducing contamination and improving the quality of recyclable materials. Chemical Recycling: This innovative process breaks down plastics into their chemical components, allowing for the recycling of materials that were previously non-recyclable. Experts from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation highlight that chemical recycling could potentially recycle 90% of plastic waste, drastically reducing landfill dependency. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): More governments are implementing EPR policies, holding manufacturers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products. A recent study by the OECD indicates that EPR schemes have led to a 20% increase in recycling rates in participating countries. Recycling Incentive Programs: Cities like San Francisco and Stockholm are leading the way with incentive-based recycling programs, offering rewards for proper recycling habits. These initiatives have resulted in recycling rates exceeding 70%, showcasing the effectiveness of consumer engagement. Circular Economy Integration: Companies are increasingly adopting circular economy principles, designing products with their end-of-life in mind. A McKinsey report states that embracing a circular economy could generate $4.5 trillion in economic benefits by 2030, while significantly reducing waste. Let's continue this conversation! How do you see these trends impacting your community or business? What innovations are you excited about in the recycling industry? Share your thoughts and join the discussion below. A puzzle for the packaging value chain – The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) The European Union is taking a bold step towards a circular economy! As of January 1st, 2030, all packaging on the EU market must be recyclable. This means that packaging must be designed with recycling in mind and sorted into specific waste streams for effective recycling. And it doesn’t stop there: By 2038, only packaging with the highest recyclability grades (A or B) will be allowed on the market. This is a game changer for the industry, driving innovation and pushing businesses to rethink how they design their packaging. In our weekly series starting today, we will open another piece of the puzzle around the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) every day. Stay tuned for more insights and information!!! #sustainability #circulareconomy #packaging #PPWR #linked2brands
