Happy 4th to those celebrating! Beyond celebrating freedom, independence, patriotism and equality, commemorating this significant milestone in US history, what might we take away from what the 4th of July represents into our work lives… 1. Standing up for what you believe in, even when it is very hard to do…? 2. Creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels like they can truly express themselves…? 3. Having the best interest of the company as our focus, even if it means making some sacrifices within the invisible boundaries we draw around our functions…? 4. Being the champion and the cheer leader to rally our people towards a better outcomes and a brighter future…? 5. Finding joy in and bringing joy into every interaction we have with others..? (Someone actually laughed when I had suggested that recently 🤔) 6. <what would you add to the list>

If you’re like me, there’s so much to do and think about that it’s easy to skip the little wins and just focus on celebrating when we reach the destination. Here’s what I’ve learned though: The celebrations along the way are a lot more important. They build morale for the journey. They build loyalty for the team. They build confidence for the challenges to come. They establish patterns for longevity. They build a culture for noticing when people do great work and helping others repeat it on purpose. When we find moments to celebrate along the way, we encourage the work and behaviors that ultimately move us toward our destination. So the question is: Who can you celebrate this week?

What can we celebrate? Well today I celebrate the fact that not only have I worked very hard for the last 20 years of my career. But this hard work pays off in so many ways. - family activity - a comfortable home - food on the table - the ability to sponsor when asked to do so - the opportunity that I’m able to give to others - the support I’m able to give others - the experience to question other people’s truth - and determination to get it done However all the above I’m still an apprentice. Some of my suppliers love the fact that I aim to control situations, others definitely despise this. Some of my clients love the fact I talk with conviction and passion. Some hate it but still appreciate that it’s out of the vision of getting things right. Can you be all things to all people all the time? NO YOU CANNOT. Look at our Olympian’s they are niche (however we only see some of what they can do) but they are masters of their sport. The worst performance can still be a mighty heroic effort. The point I am badly making here is that we need to celebrate all that is good in the world. And there’s lots of it. The sheer scale of what it takes to pull off the Olympic Games, the detail that goes into lighting a space, the effort that goes into training for that qualification, the money that has to be made to build a business, the negotiating of legal teams to get an outcome, the risks taken by emergency profession to save a life, and the confidence it takes to sing infront of thousands of people. So the celebration is this. Everyone you meet is because of the effort of hundreds of thousands of people that went before us. So make those meetings meaningful and positive and ensure on a meaningful outcome. This chance that you meet people is millions to one so do not waste your greeting.

Monica's Monday Morning Memo... sharing lessons learned and reflections from my prior work week. The highlight of last week for me was the observance of Juneteenth and the variety of events sponsored by National Grid. In 2021 National Grid celebrated Juneteenth as a company wide holiday, a year before it was made a Federal holiday. Declaring this as a holiday demonstrates National Grid's commitment to building an inclusive culture and recognizes Black Americans who have suffered the impacts of racism throughout US history. It was also an opportunity to provide colleagues extra time to participate in civil action to advance diversity, equity and inclusion. We encourage colleagues to use the holiday as a day of reflection – to celebrate Juneteenth or to attend/volunteer at an event that celebrates diversity. In observance of Juneteenth, I, along with a diverse group of colleagues, visited Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn. It is dedicated to preserving the remnants of the thriving village of Weeksville which was established by Black New Yorkers in the years after the state abolished slavery in 1827. Weeksville attracted Black people from the North and South. Some had been born free and others had been born enslaved and escaped, but all who moved there wanted the opportunity to thrive. They found that in Weeksville. Their rich stories came to light in the rediscovery of these houses more than five decades ago in 1968. (See bottom photo below) As I reflected on Juneteenth, I thought about the importance of learning more about each other; respecting and supporting each other; leaving no one behind; and building a more inclusive world...one company at a time! #nationalgrid

🌟 Celebrating Black Heritage Month at Residence Inn by Marriott Greenville @ Carolina Point ! 🌟 Throughout this incredible month of February, we've had the privilege of recognizing and honoring the rich tapestry of Black history, culture, and achievements. At Hospitality America diversity and inclusion are not just words; they are embedded in our culture, and Black Heritage Month has been a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from embracing our differences. 🤎 Our #blackhistorymonth recognition featured inspiring stories from an employee, highlighting their achievements, contributions, and the unique perspectives they bring from their family hertiage. 📚 Learning & Development: We've had #blackheritage trivia during morning huddles and discussions every Monday morning to foster a deeper understanding of Black history, racial equity, and the importance of unity. In celebrating Black History Month, NorthBay Health invited a number of our Excellent Black leaders to share thoughts on a variety of topics Today meet Desiree Chandler, Manager of Talent Acquisition, who shares her insights on the importance of diversity in the workplace and answers the question: How can our organization continue to foster an inclusive environment for everyone, especially during Black History Month?    As a Black woman and Human Resource Leader for Talent Acquisition at NorthBay Health, diversity, inclusion, and equity are deeply important to me. These values are not only fundamental to fostering a fair and inclusive workplace culture but are also essential for delivering high-quality healthcare services to our diverse patient population.   To attract diverse and underrepresented talent in healthcare, I employ a variety of recruitment techniques and strategies. I believe it's important to actively seek out partnerships and collaborations with community-based organizations that serve minority populations. By engaging with these organizations, we can tap into talent pools that may not be reached through traditional recruitment methods. Additionally, by attending and participating in job fairs and networking events specifically targeted towards diverse candidates, ensuring our outreach efforts are inclusive and accessible.   Moreover, I recognize the importance of representation in our recruitment processes. I ensure that our job postings use inclusive language and imagery to attract a diverse range of candidates. I advocate for diverse interview panels to ensure that candidates from all backgrounds feel welcomed and valued during the hiring process.   At NorthBay Health, our commitment to diversity extends beyond recruitment efforts. We actively invest in diversity and inclusion training for all staff members to promote awareness and understanding of different cultures and perspectives. We also provide mentorship and professional development opportunities specifically tailored to support the career advancement of underrepresented employees, including Black candidates.   In order to continue fostering an inclusive environment, especially during Black History Month, our organization can implement initiatives such as hosting educational workshops and events that celebrate Black culture and history throughout the year and providing platforms for Black employees to share their experiences and perspectives can further amplify their voices within the organization.   Based on my experiences, I can attest to the transformative impact that diversity brings to the workplace. When individuals from diverse backgrounds come together, we bring a wealth of unique perspectives, ideas, and experiences that drive innovation, creativity, and ultimately, better outcomes for both our employees and the communities we serve. Embracing diversity isn't just the right thing to do—it's essential for our continued success and growth as an organization.
