In my role, one of my primary goals is to regularly foster a sense of well-being and tie our company core values into the daily activities of the organization. “Show appreciation” is one of the easiest, yet most creative values I get to act on. I am constantly challenged with coming up with new ideas to show our employees how much we appreciate them, and although it can be a challenge at times trying to please every type of person and work with budget constraints, sometimes the simplest ideas work out the best. Queue Taco Tuesday! Everyone’s favorite weekly holiday. This morning we brought in Taco supplies and had the staff make their own Taco in a Bag. This mini celebration takes away no time from employees who feel too busy to participate in company activities, works for most types of diets and is a fun , more unique option than ordering in pizza ( although, everyone loves pizza once in a while). Grateful to work for a company who allows me to explore my creativity, and rarely says no to the ideas I bring that I feel will benefit the human side of the organization. 👌

Cheers to the Wins: Big, Small, and Everything in Between 🥂 The restaurant industry is a fast-paced, demanding world, and it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle. This may ruffle feathers a bit, not being a perspective agreeable to all, but.... BASIS FOR A CASE STUDY: If you're a small restaurant, not even a chain, hoping to become large and successful, a basic strategic approach is to evaluate your competition. Everyone knows this as foundational in business. McDonald's and Portillo's are open today (the 4th of July, Independence Day). As a smaller chain, especially if you're just getting started, why are you closed? "Well, you have to take some days and time off. Give yourself a break." Says people operating at the same level you're currently operating on. Yes, take breaks. However, work when others won't. But balance. I'm sure they're closing earlier than usual, but for now..... they're open. And tonight, they enjoy time and fireworks with their family. However, one thing those bigger chains aren't worried about, is not every restaurant is automatically a competitor. Where are you headed? And what does it take to get there? Restaurant heroes: General managers, managers, whatever their title is...the industry could not exist without them. Let's celebrate them all for their part in making dining out possible. They shouldn't serve 50 years to get acknowledged. In an industry where entry level turnover is astronomical a manager who hires, trains and manages for even 5 or 10 years is amazing. Think of the number of people they've taught not only work skills but life skills. Restaurant owners, founders, chefs and franchise owners: you may get occasional coverage for what you've done. 60% of restaurants in the United States fail within the first year. Today marks the 22nd year one of my bars, Green Rock, has been open. What has it done differently than some others to have this kind of success? Here are some of the traits I’ve noticed that has helped Green Rock have this kind of longevity. 1. Lose on some items to create customer satisfaction. Green Rock has always been a more comp friendly place. Could we make more money if we didn’t do this? Possibly. But the view at GR is I’d rather the customer come back every Friday and Saturday and comp them some food or a drink, then they go somewhere else. 2. Atmosphere is king. The main focus of the place is creating a fun, exciting atmosphere for everyone. We will spend more money than we probably should in order to create a unique atmosphere that promotes everybody having a great time. 3. Friendly staff. As managers we try to ensure that everyone enjoys interacting with our staff and never feel put off. This arguably keeps people coming back more than anything else. What if I told you that happiness is a choice? You’d probably be like, “What does that have to do with my restaurant revenue?” Fair! It’s a connection that not many of us in the industry make - who’s got the time? But I’m going to argue that it’s actually a paramount question to be looking at if you want your revenue to explode. Customers who have a great time at your bar or restaurant are going to be customers who want to return. And who directly interacts with your customers, and will have the biggest impact on whether they have a great time and want to return? Yeah, your employees. Employees who are dragging themselves through their shitty days are not likely to show your customers a great time. (Heck, the ones who are on auto-pilot until their shift ends probably aren't either.) So what are you supposed to do about that? Well leaders get to set the tone for their employees when they connect at the start of their day. So if happiness is a choice, then you can choose to set the tone for employees to have a great time at work, which leads to an atmosphere that creates regulars. Choose happy. Connect with your team.
