Exciting news! Benton Elementary School underwent a complete renovation this summer, resulting in a brighter and more comfortable environment for teachers and students.  The original building, along with the oldest two additions, received a full HVAC renovation, new lighting, ceilings, and roof. The HVAC updates included replacing old rooftop and VAV units, adding new DOAS units for ventilation and new hydronic ceiling cassettes to condition the classrooms.  The front offices are now served by a VRF system using Samsung HVAC’s 360 degree cassettes and new controls integrate all HVAC and lighting throughout the school.  Bi-level ceilings were removed and replaced with a more spacious, constant ceiling.  Kudos to USD259 for investing in the comfort and well-being of their students and staff! 'Schools with dangerous concrete race to replan start of term.' Seems bizarre that anyone would design and build a school using materials that will only last for 30 years! I suppose those architects & building companies are retired by now... not their problem! 'This is a lightweight "bubbly" form of concrete used widely between the 1950s and mid-1990s - usually in the form of panels on flat roofs, as well as occasionally in pitched roofs, floors and walls. The chips have fallen for this landmarked townhouse to day school conversion... Over the past few days we have looked at the #design process we go through early in the planning process. After working through tens of combinations of #core elements, especially the stairs and elevators, we have settled on an optimal arrangement. By shifting the elevator to the center of the floorplate, we freed up more valuable square footage at the front and rear of the building, maximizes the amount of available classroom space. More square footage means more students, which serves the client's core mission, and also improves the financial viability of the instruction. By placing the elevator in the center, we also avoid excessive excavation on the property line, which could require complex access agreements and legal negotiations. From the first sketches we make, we keep in mind all the steps in the process, focused on getting to the finish line. #zoninghacks

Building schools with built-in obsolescence may lead to a disaster unless we understand the consequences.
