Rather than announcing the end of the watch industry after three years of uninterrupted growth and record years, we should reflect on the positives which are the resilience that this industry has shown each time it was at risk. The start of the Geneva Watches and Wonders show was a bit tense, because the sales figures of the watch industry weren't that great recently... but not since recently, like most of the journalists seem to think. The second half of 2023 was already very challenging in terms of sell-out figures and only half of the brands featured on the Morgan Stanley x Luxeconsult Sàrl top 50 achieved growth, fifteen on the contrary had declining sales compared year-on-year. To cut a long story short, the show ended with more smiles than anyone would have expected in the first place. We saw of course a more cautious approach by most of the institutional brands and more discreet brand CEO's, but also very coherent product launches helping in times of uncertainty. The industry is coping mainly with economical and geopolitical issues that it can't influence, but at the same time it is achieving the challenge of connecting with the younger demographics, which is the main challenge for the whole luxury industry. These trends would carve a niche market but remained elusive for the mainstream consumer. Reminiscing, one way we made trail fashion accessible to everyone, was to infuse trail-inspired elements into beloved classics like the New Balance 574 or the adidas Superstar. By incorporating rugged colorways and subtle design nods, we would bridge the gap between functional trail gear and everyday wearability.
