Almost 3 years ago, I jumped from offshore oil and gas into the new world of #nuclear. What has surprised me most, is just how many transferable skills and how much knowledge and experience from the oil and gas sector is directly relevant to nuclear. The nuclear industry is entering its renaissance period, embracing new Innovations and First of a Kind Technologies that will create exciting new opportunities both in the UK and globally. New thinking and transferable experience from other industries, such as my old industry of oil and gas will play a key role in its success. #DestinationNuclear launched this week and Jacobs is proud to be part of this first-of-its-kind national campaign to help future-proof the industry. The UK alone has plans to quadruple our nuclear capacity, meaning we will need +120,000 new jobs filled by 2030. The good news is that many people already have the skills to work in this sector, helping the UK towards a safer and cleaner future.

Absolutely correct. For sure the industry needs nuclear engineers and experts in physics and chemistry but I worked for over 35 years in the industry and only ever met a handful of them (and to be fair they were always very very clever). But, for example, if you want to get involved in decommissioning you will recognise that generally a 1/3 of Decom projects involve some form of new build …. And that there are logistics, safety, QA, finance and many other traditional, non-nuclear trades involved as well as the need for Project Managers, planners and project engineers etc… the same for new build…. It therefore needs - to transition into the industry from ‘outside’ - an understanding of where it came from, how it developed, the accidents and therefore an understanding of why safety and safety cases and Hazops are important, in order to utilise your current skills in this crazy but exciting industry….

Fuel Design Review - Online Education Course The reliable, safe and economical performance of nuclear fuel depends on its design, the processes used for its fabrication and the environment for its operation. Each of these three areas requires strict Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) to assure that performance goals are achieved. The factors that control the quality are quite different in each of these areas, nevertheless they are interactive and the plant operator as well as the fuel vendor has to be aware of all of them. The trend to more demanding performance parameters and the competitive reload fuel market have resulted in a design evolution that could outpace experience. This has produced a renewed need for design reviews and associated audits to assure reliable fuel performance and maximize plant availability. The overall objective of the Design Review is to assure that the fuel assembly or fuel reload will perform reliably at or above the contracted conditions with adequate margins to design limits and licensing limits for its intended exposure in the reactor. The nuclear industry must collaborate and cooperate to ensure that a commercial model exists where a facility can be priced, planned, scheduled, and delivered accordingly. The refurbishments in Canada have a plan, clear preparations, and then executed accordingly. To do this, the engineering is completed, the supply chain is secured with 90%+ parts delivered before construction starts, then executed per a detailed schedule. This is now the standard. It’s not necessarily about the technology as there are many designs, it will be consistently about which company has a “real” product that has design complete, supply chain secured, and able to execute the construction on time and on budget. A true commercial model.
