What evolves faster? Your strategy, your people, or your processes? The art of bridging strategy, people, and processes enables organizations to future-proof their businesses. Companies thrive when there's a strong and flexible connection between their strategic vision, the capabilities and engagement of their people, and the efficiency of their processes to bring that strategy to life. An organization’s processes are, in reality, the way the organization works; its systems and workflows form the execution blueprint. These processes ensure that the right resources are allocated, tasks are carried out efficiently, and goals are met; they turn strategy into action. However, this is easier said than done. I am certain that most of us have been in situations where, although everything is changing, key processes remain unchanged, resulting in execution delays and frustrations. So, the question is, how do you create processes that are less bureaucratic and easier to adapt to changes? The key is to have a fresh look and an open mind, and consider following these four steps: ✔ Align with strategic goals by eliminating unnecessary steps that may have been added over time but no longer serve a meaningful purpose. ✔ Streamline process documentation by focusing only on essential information. Avoid excessive detail that can contribute to bureaucracy and use clear and concise language to enhance understanding. ✔ Eliminate redundancy by streamlining the workflow and delegating decision-making authority to those closest to the tasks. Empowering employees fosters a sense of ownership and reduces the need for multiple levels of approval. ✔ Encourage flexibility by avoiding rigid structures and allowing for deviations when necessary, enabling teams to respond to dynamic situations. As the business landscape changes faster than ever, continuous adaptation is crucial. By fostering synergy among strategy, people, processes, and a keen understanding of the business landscape, organizations can enhance their resilience, innovation, and overall competitiveness. Interesting operational philosophy... Winning through slowification, simplification, and amplification. I haven't read the book yet, I just bought it. This feels similar to my See. Think. Decide. Act. mantra in my attempt to slow things down to take a wide, intentional and deliberate approach to help leaders manage, lead and govern their organization to better business results. Today's operations technology claims to drive fast or instant decisions. Making decisions quickly isn't always the objective. Most important operations and asset management decisions have medium and long-term timeframes for value delivery (see my blog on The Speed of Business is 2.4, link below). They are best made within asset and business planning processes where calm, cool heads prevail and choices are not made under duress. The diagram within seems sound. My only reservation is the suggestion to break down and partition large, complex problems into smaller ones that are simpler to solve. We must be careful here. Why? Our operations are complex adaptive systems, networks of people, processes and technologies where everything is connected and must work together to deliver value. I'm all for sensemaking of complex problems within complex systems, but simplifying has limits, and oversimplifying can be counterproductive. Generally, breaking things up and simplifying can help organizations reach good performance, but to become pacesetters with consistently high performance, we must embrace and lean into the complexity. It might seem semantic, but I prefer "distilling," where problems are boiled to their essence without losing complexity.
