#SAEPA has released its ‘PFAS in waste soils interim guideline’ following consultation with industry. This guideline provides interim direction and guidance for the reuse of waste soils containing PFAS, and outlines our position on the suitability of waste soils containing specific levels of PFAS for reuse or disposal. What is PFAS? #PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide variety of products since the 1950s. They are known for their water-resistance, stain-resistance, and heat-resistance. Some common products that contain PFAS include non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant carpets and firefighting foam. PFAS are very stable chemicals, which means they don't break down easily in the environment. They can also travel long distances through soil and water, which means they can end up in places they weren't originally intended to be. This guideline will apply until new regulations are in place. Last week we learnt about the tragic illegal clearance of around 40 trees at one of our Bush For Life sites in the City of Burnside. This is the second time this site has been cleared illegally. I invite you to listen to this interview on ABC Adelaide's SA Afternoons where I talk to Sonya Feldhoff about this devastating incident and why we need stronger protection for trees and native vegetation in South Australia (starts at 6:00 minutes): https://lnkd.in/g-YnDESh Natasha Davis Chief Executive Officer If you have any information that can help, please contact the City of Burnside customer experience team on 8366 4200 or burnside@burnside.sa.gov.au.

One of my major concerns these days is what I call #circularitywashing. 🔄 In this article (link below 👇), the author delves into reflections sparked by a recent conference in Seattle. But let me tell you, the same story is playing out everywhere. The #circulareconomy buzz has taken over, especially within the well-oiled marketing engines of corporate giants. 🌐🏢 And don't get me wrong, the core concept is solid (although achieving a fully circular economy might be a stretch). It boils down to some simple principles: 🛑 Don't deplete renewable resources faster than they can naturally replenish (be it harvesting or growth). 🌿🔄 🛑 Don't consume non-renewable resources faster than secondary resources or substitutes can step in, all while safeguarding ecosystems from degradation, whether through pollution or resource scarcity. 🚫🏭🌍 The historical roots of this idea (think Kenneth Boulding's 'spaceship earth,' Limits to Growth, Herman Daly's #SteadyState) are deeply intertwined with acknowledging ecological limits and sufficiency. 🚀🌌 From a design and conceptual standpoint, plenty of commendable innovations have emerged. Thumbs up for Product-as-a-Service models, designs focusing on reuse and repair, waste reduction, and eco-efficiency. 🌟🛠️🔄 However, over the past decade or so, it's taken a detour into being a "business opportunity," as the article aptly explains. It's now a stage for the grand spectacle of #greengrowth (a noble attempt to separate economic progress from finite resource depletion). 🌱💰📈 This might be why, in my humble opinion, many policymakers and businesses aren't rattled by the current haze shrouding discussions (even though academia has diligently tried to bring clarity, case in point: https://lnkd.in/deXWc4tZ). 📚🔍 But let's face it, it's fantastic PR to label your practices as 'circular' by tossing in some recycling. 🔄🌈 Sounds environmentally friendly, right? Is everything awry then? No, not entirely. There's a lot of merit in the strategies borne from the circular economy ideal. ♻️🌏 What's direly needed, however, is an overhaul of markets. Here's what I'd suggest: 💠 Universal right-to-repair standards 🛠️🔧 💠Clear transparency about a product's lifespan and its environmental footprint 🕊️📊 💠True pricing that factors in all hidden costs 🏷️💰 Incentives against planned obsolescence (less in-your-face advertising, perhaps?) 📢🚫 💠Encouragement to use more recycled and secondary resources 🔄🛢️ 💠A shift in taxes from labour to resources ♻️💼 In my view, these shifts hold more potential to expedite the journey towards circularity than the boardroom tactics or "innovative business models." There's no shortage of brilliant circular ideas; what's lacking is a properly functioning market ecosystem that nurtures circularity. 🔄🌐🌍 https://lnkd.in/dB-Mtmvx

I like seeing the breakdown of government spending in my tax receipt each year to see how we each invest in Australian society through our taxes. But where is the allocation to Environment? Surely it warrants highlighting alongside 'Industry assistance' and 'Recreation & culture'? Tanya Plibersek

☀️🌊 The Ripple Effects of a Warmer Ocean: Positive Feedback Loops 🔁 An Often Overlooked Aspect Of Climate Change: The Feedback Loop With Sea Level Rise & Cold Water Mitigating CO2 Levels. Let's Dig In 👇 Warmer temperatures exacerbate the melting of polar ice, leading to #sealevelrise levels. But did you know that our oceans also play a vital role in moderating atmospheric CO2 levels? Cold water has a unique ability to dissolve and absorb gases like CO2 much more effectively than warmer water. This is where the positive feedback loop comes into play. As temperatures rise, ocean waters become warmer, impairing their capacity to retain CO2. Consequently, more CO2 remains in the atmosphere, intensifying climate change and further accelerating sea level rise. However, there's a silver lining! The chilliest waters in our oceans serve as natural "carbon sinks." Due to their lower temperatures, they can absorb significant amounts of CO2, helping to counteract the detrimental effects of global warming. Protecting these cold water regions becomes crucial in breaking the feedback loop and stabilizing our climate. Let's stand together as a global community to support initiatives aimed at preserving our oceans and combating climate change. By recognizing the pivotal role of cold water in absorbing CO2, we can take significant steps toward a sustainable future. 🌏💙 #ClimateAction #OceanConservation #Sustainability #ClimateChangeAwareness
