Using filters is a way to stop the amount of light reaching the camera sensor, thereby allowing the camera to be on a higher aperture for a longer amount of time. Instead of changing the aperture to reduce the amount of light in the image, you would add a neutral density (ND) filter, then adjust the exposure. Lower numbers block some light, higher numbers block a lot of light. The more stops of light your filter blocks, the longer shutter speed you can successfully use.
