My First Side Hustle had NOTHING to do with my past experiences, but it did definitely help mold my FUTURE! At the age of 20, I embarked on one of my most memorable side hustle experiences.  While some may have started earlier, I firmly believe that it's never too late to begin this journey. Today, I'm excited to share this story with you. 🌆 The Setting: I found myself back in the UAE as the initial wave of COVID subsided, and the events industry started picking up again. It was during this time that a friend referred me to a fantastic volunteering opportunity. 🌟 The Event: The event that caught my eye was centered around Banking and Fintech, a topic I was eager to explore. My role had two critical components: 1️⃣ Stage Setup and Program Flow: - I was responsible for ensuring the event's smooth execution - From setting up the stage to managing the program's flow, including AV support. 2️⃣ Networking with Guests: - Another essential part of my role was connecting with the event's guests and establishing relationships with program sponsors. - This experience was my introduction to the power of networking in the professional world. 💡 The Takeaways: While this gig wasn't a long-term commitment, it marked a significant milestone in my journey.  It opened my eyes to the world of side hustles and the potential to create multiple income streams. Beyond the financial aspect, it allowed me to connect with seasoned professionals, reinforcing the importance of effective communication and sales skills. 💰 The Reward: Yes, I did get paid for my efforts. While the monetary reward wasn't substantial, the intangible benefits were immeasurable.  It taught me that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected opportunities. I could have easily dismissed this chance due to its apparent lack of relevance to my core degree, but I'm grateful I didn't. 🔑 My Message to You: Take chances! You never know what doors may open. Many people's first reaction to RollDeep is, "oh, another experience marketplace." I understand this reaction, as experience marketplaces are the standard across the #proptech experience industry. We are taking a different approach. RollDeep is a network. Direct partnerships between local businesses/service providers and hosts are the best way to help travelers realize deep, authentic travel experiences while keeping more travel dollars in local economies. Before starting RollDeep, we were short term rental hosts who spent a lot of time referring our guests to small businesses in our area. When we started looking for ways to formalize these relationships, we found that the major travel experience software platforms were designed to cut us, hosts, out of the deal. We initially thought of RollDeep as a bespoke tool for us to use with our vendors. When we told folks what we were up to, however, every last person said "I WANT THAT!" Most then dove into personal stories of how it would have helped their own businesses and/or travel experiences. We realized we were confronting a problem shared across the industry. So we rethought our idea at the scale of the industry. Instead of just us connecting our properties with the local economy, we built a network that allows all hosts to connect with the local services that would enhance their guests' trips, increase their bottom line, and keep more dollars in their local economies. Just spent an energising and very productive 2 days with this crew to talk through our learnings from 2023 and how we plan to grab 2024 by the horns. One of the many topics we touched on was how we can harness the power of our #CollectiveWisdom. The Data & Software Solutions team aims to build the single source of truth for real estate data and insights in #SoutheastAsia, as our contribution to PropertyGuru Group's vision to power #communities to live, work and thrive in tomorrow's cities. This is a big ambition, and we need #diversity in thinking to design and build for diversity. I am a firm believer in #plurality - in cognitive diversity, perspectives and life experiences. Each leader in the team brings a different set of skills, expertise, work styles and life stories. While this diversity leads to debates (which can get heated at times), healthy friction and constructive discussions bring out the best thinking. The key is to "go hard on the problem, but soft on the person". We challenge one another, get the work done, then share a beer/wine/laugh. For most of February, March, April, and May of this year, I couldn’t walk across my apartment without collapsing out of breath. Long covid is scary and debilitating… I started noticing mild symptoms last June: unexplained fatigue, breathlessness, and forgetfulness. By last fall, they were bad enough that I stopped going to the gym and traveling. No more #digitalnomad 😞 And they left me stuck at home for most of this year. I opened up about it in November at Surf and Sales, and to a couple of colleagues at Lavender 💜 But otherwise, I kept it to myself. I turned down an invitation to represent a company at SaaStr last month, And I’ve been off LinkedIn, too. Just focusing on recovering. Well, I have good news! I’m feeling a lot better now! 🙌 Long story short, I made a treatment plan using research studies and anecdotes found online, and parts of it have worked wonderfully for me! I started steadily improving back in June, and I had a sudden improvement after a procedure this month. A couple of months ago, I started working part-time - only as much as I could handle each week. At first, I helped a past boss, Evan Jones, with GTM for his new company, Bonboard. I love working with Evan. Then, I started advising my friend Nishant Deshpande with his startup, OpenPitch. He has since signed their first paying clients 👏 Then, my friend Darren Fanton ✦ asked me to help with sales calls for ScreenSpace ✦ while he finalizes a big partnership. I met Darren at SaaStr last year and was happy to help out. It’s felt good to get back to work. Right now, I’m about 75% of my normal self, and improving. I still can’t go to the gym for more than 20 minutes of light lifting, but otherwise I feel great! And I’m starting to think about my next full-time role. Will I go full-time with one of these three companies? Or will I choose a larger one? I haven’t decided yet. I need to work with them more, pay attention to my health, and catch up on the state of the market. But what I do know, is that I’m ready to give more time to work, and to LinkedIn again 😊 So, hi everyone! 👋 I missed you! And I hope you’ve all had a better go of it than me lately… 🤦♂️
