"Jay is always willing to help wherever needed. He hauls cement/ash in Northeast Iowa, Wisconsin, and Cedar Rapids; as well as oversize/overweight equipment. Jay is a pleasure to work with and a great asset to Croell, Inc." Nominated by: Julie Bloom, East Trucking Manager Favorite thing about working at Croell: A lot of different people from employees to people at the terminals Most interesting project: First job I did at Croell was hauling equipment back from Longmont, CO with Bob Dreckman and John Bush. Didn't know either of them so I was nervous, but it went well and we became friends. What advice would you give to someone who might want to join Croell: Don't get overwhelmed. You won't learn everything in 1 or 2 weeks. But it gets easier as time goes on. Hobbies include: We spend almost every weekend on the river boating, water skiing, and wake boarding with friends and family. One thing people probably don’t know about me: I had a stroke in 2004. Spent 10 days in the hospital, was using a walker and then a cane. Recovered nicely though! Bucket list: Would love to get a pilot's license and fly my own plane. #CroellInc #EmployeeSpotlight #EmployeeRecognition

How would you transport a giraffe internationally? Maybe like in the picture below? Here are the conditions: - The giraffe cannot lie down. - The giraffe cannot be sedated. Giraffes can reach heights of over 5 meters, while in standard international transport, the truck from the ground to its highest point can’t exceed 4 meters unless it’s an oversized load. Now, stop for a moment and think - how would you solve this? Below, you’ll find the solution, but give yourself a minute to work through this logistical puzzle. And thanks to this exercise, you’ll remember that in international transport, the maximum height for a standard truck is 4 meters! The solution? There are special trailers designed for transporting giraffes. They’re similar to the ones used for horses, but much taller to accommodate their height! I post one in the comments section.

I had to get two new tyres today. As expected, it was not cheap. It got me thinking though about how we as lawyers value our work, and how we broach the subject of fee costs with our clients. When it was confirmed that I did in fact need two new tyres, we all knew it would be reasonably pricy. We also all knew that I had pricing options if I didn't want to pay quite so much. However, you do get what you pay for and when 400+ horses are going through the back end of this beast, it's worth paying for quality and peace of mind. As I drove off, somewhat poorer, I thought about how easy this conversation had been compared to some of the pricing conversations I've had with clients. The underlying principle is the same - you get what you pay for. Clients can choose a belt and braces, gold standard service, and by and large, expect to pay for it. Or, they can choose to economise, and they will therefore get less in some respects. The tyre place knew I needed the tyres, it was just a question of which ones. Similarly, clients buy legal services because they need them. So, why, if we stand behind the quality of our work, are we scared to be clear about what it will cost? The tyre place wasn't! If the tyre place had done more work than replacing my tyres, I'd expect to pay for it, so why is it different in legal services? If we end up doing more work than we originally thought, again, why are we reluctant to provide an additional quote and charge more for that work? How many times have we swept it into the original quote as "goodwill gesture"? How often do we offer a discount to our rates before even providing the basic details? I know it's a difficult market place at the moment, but we are a skilled bunch and can often save our clients a lot of money and potential liability, so why do we sell ourselves short? (Shameless excuse to post this cool photo...) #legalservices #lawyers #law #pricing #feecosts #mustang #leeds #yorkshire #yorkshirelawyer
