🌟 Understanding Breast Sarcoma: A Rare but Important Diagnosis 🌟 As a surgical oncologist, I often encounter various types of cancers, but breast sarcoma remains one of the rarer forms that can affect women. Today, I want to share an important case that emphasizes the need for awareness and understanding of this condition. What is Breast Sarcoma? Breast sarcoma is a type of cancer that originates in the connective tissues of the breast, such as fat, muscle, and blood vessels. Unlike the more common breast carcinomas, which arise from the epithelial cells, sarcomas are classified as soft tissue tumors and can be aggressive. Key Features of Breast Sarcoma: 1. **Rarity**: Breast sarcomas account for less than 1% of all breast cancers, making them a rare diagnosis. This rarity can lead to delays in recognition and treatment. 2. **Symptoms**: Patients may notice a lump or mass in the breast, which can sometimes be painful. Unlike typical breast cancer, these lumps may not always be associated with changes in the skin or nipple. 3. **Diagnosis**: Accurate diagnosis often requires imaging studies (like mammograms or MRIs) and a biopsy. Early detection is crucial for better outcomes. 4. **Treatment**: Treatment usually involves surgical intervention, and in some cases, radiation therapy may be indicated. Chemotherapy is less common but may be used for high-grade tumors. 5. **Prognosis**: The prognosis for breast sarcoma varies significantly based on factors such as tumor size, grade, and whether it has spread. Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal. Breast cancer cells begin inside the milk ducts and/or the milk-producing lobules of the breast. The earliest form (in situ) is not life-threatening. Cancer cells can spread into nearby breast tissue (invasion). This creates tumours that cause lumps or thickening. Invasive cancers can spread to nearby lymph nodes or other organs (metastasize). Metastasis can be fatal. Treatment is based on the person, the type of cancer and its spread. Treatment combines surgery, radiation therapy and medications. Scope of the problem In 2020, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685 000 deaths globally. As of the end of 2020, there were 7.8 million women alive who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 5 years, making it the world’s most prevalent cancer. Breast cancer occurs in every country of the world in women at any age after puberty but with increasing rates in later life, and no one cares until it happens to you. Kimlyn was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in November. The news has been shocking and life changing. She began chemo on the 14th of December and had her second session last week. It's important to explore alternative Screening Methodologies, particularly those that may encourage an extension of the age range for breast Screening in younger women. MammoScreen Project is set up with the aim of generating clinical evidence on the use of Mammowave - a new Mammograph based on microwave frequency, for Breast Cancer Screening. We're glad to see the recommended age for mammograms is back to age 40 for those with average risk in the recent guidelines by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, however we believe there's more to be done. We need annual screenings instead of every other year, more proactive options for younger people at higher-risk, routine discussions about breast cancer risk with doctors starting at age 30, and specialized imaging for those with dense breast tissue. ✨ Exciting Update in Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines ✨ The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recently updated its guidelines for Breast Cancer Screening, now recommending biennial screening mammography for women aged 40 to 74 years. This is aligned with other organizations: The American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the NCCN, that also advocate for initiating mammography screening at age 40 for women at average risk. 🤔 However, no specific recommendations for dense breasts have been made, stating that “the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of supplemental screening using ultrasound or MRI”. 🔎 As we celebrate progress in breast cancer screening, it’s imperative to address the disparities and challenges faced by women with dense breast tissue. 👩🔬 At The Blue Box Biomedical Solutions we are working to face this challenge, offering a non-invasive and highly accurate method for detecting breast cancer, unaffected by breast density. Scope of the problem In 2022, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 670 000 deaths globally. #BreastCancer occurs in every country of the world in women at any age after puberty but with increasing rates in later life.  Global estimates reveal striking inequities in the breast cancer burden according to human development. For instance, in countries with a very high Human Development Index (HDI), 1 in 12 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 71 women die of it. In contrast, in countries with a low HDI; while only 1 in 27 women is diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, 1 in 48 women will die from it.
