You would not believe this: 🎤 Standard Operating Procedures for Singing in CBRN Training 🎤 Attention, CBRN trainees! We're rolling out a new and highly classified Standard Operating Procedure as part of the 10th ISEMI anniversary: Singing in the Field. In our past trainings worldwide, we experienced a high interest of singing by trainees. In a hard work like response to CBRN incident, it´s very important to find a way how to relax, get out of the stress and take serious things a bit funny. They can be used in any CBRN training. Because nothing says "team spirit" like belting out some tunes in your hazmat suit! Here are your SOP guidelines: 1.    Warm-Up Exercises: Before singing, ensure your vocal cords are as ready as your protective gear. Think "Do-Re-Mi" in a gas mask. 2.    Song Selection: Choose songs that promote unity and morale. "Making the world a safer place" by CBRN Warriors (ISEMI band) is preferred over "Toxic" by Britney Spears for obvious reasons. 3.    Harmony and Safety: Remember, harmonizing is encouraged, but make sure it doesn't interfere with your ability to communicate critical information. "Hazmat harmonies" should be a thing, not a hazard. 4.    Instruments Optional: If someone happens to have a portable decontaminated ukulele, it’s time to shine. However, the priority should still be on your decontamination protocols over your musical prowess. 5.    Choreography: Limited to jazz hands or subtle head bobbing. Anything more could compromise the integrity of your suit or cause a containment breach. Safety first, dance second. 6.    Trust-Building: Singing together builds trust. Make sure everyone gets a solo, even if it’s just a single note in a group "Kumbaya." 7.    Cooldown Song: End each session with a calming tune like "Lean on Me." This will help lower stress levels and keep the team spirit high. Remember, the team that sings together, decontaminates together! In the world of maritime safety, having advanced medical equipment on board is crucial. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are a prime example of such equipment. Real stories have shown that AEDs have saved lives on Cruises and ferries. That's why it's recommended that all vessels carry AEDs like the Lifeforce model, which is durable, easy to use, and approved for marine environments. Research has shown that in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, every minute counts. The chances of survival decrease by as much as 10% with each passing minute without defibrillation. Considering the remote locations of ships and the possible delay in medical response, onboard AEDs could mean the difference between life and death. Incorporating AED usage into the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) is crucial. By doing so, we equip our maritime professionals with the knowledge and skills to react to cardiac emergencies effectively and promptly. Let's ensure that the welfare of our seafarers remains our top priority. After all, they are the lifeblood of the maritime industry. Today the IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) completed its 10th session with the following outcome. - The Sub-Committee finalized the Terms of Reference for the review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code. It is intended to start the work by an intersessional working group that may meet in February 2025 the week before the scheduled meeting of HTW 11. The work will be carried out in two stages, first a comprehensive review and secondly, based on the outcome of the former, a more targeted revision. - The Sub-Committee agreed to develop guidance and ultimately training standards for working on board ships with new fuels and power sources. This work will be done parallel to the review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code. - The Sub-Committee validated the revised models courses 1.32 and 1.35 and agreed on terms of reference for revising model courses 1.37, 2.06 and 1.21. The revision of the latter model course (Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities) regards incorporating the recent amendments to STCW Table A-VI/1-4 (a new competence on prevention and mitigation of bullying and harassment in the maritime sector).
