Raising the Bar for Healthcare: Global Sustainability Standards Published 🌍 The Geneva Sustainability Centre, in collaboration with Joint Commission International, has published on 1st July environmental sustainability standards for hospitals. They form the Global Health Impact chapter of JCI’s Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and will be effective from January 2025. This initiative represents a pivotal step in reducing hospitals’ carbon footprint while maintaining the highest standards of care. It focus on five key areas ▪ Governance: Overseeing and documenting sustainability efforts. ▪ Employee Involvement: Encouraging staff participation in green practices. ▪ Resource Management: Efficient use of energy and materials, and implementing green processes. ▪ Supply Chain: Purchasing sustainable products and managing suppliers. ▪ Infrastructure: Ensuring services can withstand environmental challenges. Despite this our sector was at the risk of being ‘landed’ with ESG measures that were agnostic and not fit for purpose for healthcare. Then along came the Geneva Sustainability Centre who, through a global participation pilot and co design, have developed the Sustainability Accelerator Tool. It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey or if you are just getting started as the tool begins with a 56 question Maturity Assessment.  Multi-site hospitals can aggregate their data to assist to understand trends, strategize funding and priorities. So, whether you are digitizing medical leaflets, reducing food waste or switching to an EV fleet, there are a huge range of strategies that can be deployed, especially if we learn from each other and share practices to accelerate our collective progress. The tool is data informed and helps to underpin the reporting we will all need to do over time and ensuring trackability.
