Sustainability in healthcare systems isn't only the realm of the individual(s) charged with reducing GHG's. The mandate for climate adaptation and resilience impacts everything from food services to care demand & utilization to finances and health equity. It's not 'someone else's problem'. Great work here from SingHealth, National University Health System, Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare and Centre for Sustainable Healthcare

💉 I was amazed at the turnout at the public plenary: Driving Net Zero Healthcare in Asia and Around the World organised by Centre for Sustainable Medicine with guests from Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare - there were not one, but two overflow rooms for the event. (No… I wasn’t the latest one and I was not in the last room ☺️) Insights that resonate with me: 💊 Sustainability is not just about environmental sustainability but also manpower and financial sustainability. 💊 Sustainability is marathon, not a sprint - as much as we like to do things quickly, there needs to be time and effort on communication to staff. 💊 As always, it is important to secure commitment from senior management to drive change. 💊 The shift towards a capitation model has potential to lower the high costs of health care, and helps sustainability through increasing efficiency, potentially reducing the number of appointments required, and hence reducing patients’ carbon footprints from travelling. 💊 Fostering interdisciplinary knowledge is important for driving change through collaboration. 🌿 I was tickled and intrigued by questions submitted from the floor, such as whether hospitals would consider implementing a plant-based diet for all patients. As a naturally slim person who has been experimenting with that, and am struggling to fully go plant-based as one of my goals this year is to gain more lean mass for health reasons, this made me wonder about possibilities. I have been seeing some delicious-looking and high-protein hot food recipes (like tofu and chickpea “pasta”in tomato sauce) on Instagram recently, so I wonder if this is possible in an institution with resources…? At the same time, the delicious Singaporean food served at the event made me wonder if our local patients would feel happy with only plant-based meals when ill in bed… 🌱 The developments at National University Health System and SingHealth sound exciting - I’m looking forward to seeing developments at National Healthcare Group as well! #esg #sustainability #collaborationforchange
