MEGC serves as a virtual pipeline, enabling gas delivery to areas lacking infrastructure. This reduces the risk of the plant being left without power, which could be financially unacceptable and cause long-term damage to the business. ❗ Attention Resource Entities with Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) and Wind-powered Generation Resources (WGRs) in Texas! ❗ 🌡 ERCOT Urges Swift Implementation of Ride-Through Enhancements In response to critical reliability risks posed by ride-through failures, ERCOT is calling on Resource Entities to expedite the implementation of protection system enhancements and other improvements. These measures, based on insights from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), aim to maximize frequency and voltage ride-through capability, bolstering the stability of our energy grid. ✅ Action Required: Resource Entities are requested to report their implementation plans (including schedules) by August 1, 2024, ensuring swift action to enhance system resilience. ERCOT will provide additional instructions by July 1, 2024. ⚠ Key Insights: Despite ongoing discussions surrounding NOGRR 245, stakeholders agree on the urgent need to implement these enhancements to mitigate reliability issues. 🚀 Further Details: For full details and requirements, refer to Planning Guide Revision Request (PGRR) 109 and the associated guidelines. 👉 As you navigate the implementation process, our team at GridTech Solutions LLC is here to provide support and expertise. Let's work together to ensure a resilient and stable energy grid for Texas#ERCOT #RenewableEnergy #GridResilience #TexasEnergy Source: https://lnkd.in/gftVkMQB

Transgrid is responsible for ensuring sufficient system strength services are available to maintain the stability and security of the NSW power system into the future. This week we published our assessment of over 100 individual 'non-network' and network solutions to meet NSW's needs (read it here: https://lnkd.in/gmpGK_Ax). We have identified that a diverse portfolio of solutions is required over the next decade, including: > 8 - 14 synchronous condensers > Modifications to several generators to enable them to operate in synchronous condenser mode > Contracts with existing hydro, gas and coal generators to fill gaps in system strength when required > 4.8GW of grid-forming batteries Transgrid will be holding two industry briefing sessions to share these insights: > Monday 24 June - Industry briefing. ICYMI: In Texas, rising electricity demand and inadequate investment in dispatchable electricity sources, such as natural gas and batteries, are putting grid reliability at risk. Reliability in ERCOT, the state’s grid operator, can be enhanced by deploying a portfolio of “insurance” options, write energy experts Peter R. Hartley, Kenneth B. Medlock III, and Shih Yu (Elsie) Hung. “Allowing risks to reliability that can be avoided at reasonable cost is unacceptable. … Resource adequacy and reliability are in the best interests of all market participants — producers and consumers alike.” 📖 Read the full report.

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) releases the Draft Distribution Perspective Plan 2030 As per the Electricity Act, 2003, the CEA is obligated to prepare the National Electricity Plan once in five years. Further, under the Act, the CEA is also required to formulate short-term and perspective plans for development of the electricity system. In compliance with such requirements under the Act, the CEA has prepared the Draft Distribution Perspective Plan 2030, based on the data received from distribution utilities. The public and stakeholders may submit their inputs/comments/suggestions on the Draft Distribution Perspective Plan to the CEA by 1st April 2024. #CEA #DistributionPlan #NewsUpdate #PublicConsultation #MinistryofPower #CentralElectricityAuthority #DraftPlan #MercadosEMI

This letter from Ofgem on the very substantial connections queue, focussing on the proposed “first ready, first connected” reforms by ESO is useful in sign posting possible next steps - for ESO in developing the model further, and to market participants in terms of fleshing that out. And there is an invitation for stakeholders to provide feedback to the regulator on key component parts of the proposed model. Of course, people are already busy responding on REMA but this area warrants serious attention. Connection queues have ramifications for deployment of generation, storage and various sources of demand, but also feeds into long term scenario planning and network options assessments at a transmission and distribution level (for strategic investment, assets reinforcement, and assessment of possible substitution with other sources of flexibility). This really gets to the heart of key issues for the transition: keeping investors enthused, business models rolling, and the pace of deployment high, and ensuring efficient investment in networks with costs optimised. But - (oh no)- we also have added another acronym…”TMO4+”. I had only just go my head around SSEP…
Today, we at Ofgem published an open letter setting out our expectations in response to ESO's publication this week on their enhanced First Ready, First Connected proposal (referred to as ‘TMO4+’). Despite some process improvements to date, the connections queue has continued to grow at an unprecedented rate, meaning further reforms are required, and it's right that the ESO are focusing on the entire (new and existing) electricity connections queue. The National Grid ESO proposal has the potential to deliver the goals set out in the joint Ofgem and DESNZ Connections Action Plan (CAP). But it needs to be developed alongside a full assessment of risks and benefits with a robust plan for regulatory and operational implementation. We're also asking for stakeholder views on whether this proposal meets expectations, or whether further action is needed. I'd encourage everyone with an interest to respond to the letter by Monday 6 May 2024. Link to the open letter: https://lnkd.in/eM93TxxE Link to the ESO's proposals: https://lnkd.in/eMhRVFWh

See the attached for the comments we submitted on the DMRE's draft integrated resource plan for 2023. We focus on the electricity demand projections - this is a key component of IRP planning because it is key to assessing how much new generation capacity may be required, which types of generation resources are required to meet changing demand and how much transmission and distribution networks should be expanded and where. Our main concern is that the IRP 2023 supply scenarios seemed to have been based on one very optimistic forecast of future electricity demand - the IRP must at minimum consider a range of possible demand outcomes. We also demonstrate that econometric forecasts can provide a very useful 'sense check' to end-use/bottom-up approaches. https://lnkd.in/dxuTDmnm

Great to have been involved in writing our latest flash update looking at the latest government response on long-duration energy storage. If you want to know more, give one of our team a call! Ben Brown Simon Davies With thanks to Zoe P. for making this digital. #energystorage #EnergyTransition #LDES
The UK Government has announced that it will provide financial support for long-duration energy storage (LDES) through a cap and floor mechanism. There are two application routes: 🟩 Stream 1 for established technologies (100MW, TRL 9) and; 🟩 Stream 2 for novel technologies (50MW, TRL 8, under review) The application window for the LDES cap and floor regime is expected to open in 2025, pending final decisions from the government and Ofgem on key details, which will be outlined later this year or in pre-qualification information. Find out more on what this means for the #EnergyTransition: https://lnkd.in/e3CSN3EP Read out to the team to find out more: Ben Brown, Simon Davies, Rory Budworth and Clare Keates
