The U.S. Department of Transportation Reconnecting Communities Story Map spotlights the stories of 4 communities (including Philadelphia) & the historic context for the #ChinatownStitch project. It references DVRPC's 2018 "Reviving Vine" study which evaluated the feasibility of a road diet in order to mitigate the negative impacts of the Vine Street Expressway and adjoining roads in response to community concerns. https://lnkd.in/eEC4CQ-f

OK I’m going to say it: THERE IS NO POINT ELECTING LOCAL COUNCILS IN AUSTRALIA The function of councils is essentially apolitical - bins, street cleaning, local services, libraries etc - this needs to be executed efficiently no matter where in the political spectrum you sit. We should replace local councils with corporations owned by the people - but independent of state government. Give them clear guidelines on actions and planning, plus greater digitisation and visibility of decision-making. Clear planning guidelines and constraints per suburb. Consistent ongoing community feedback mechanisms. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Red, Green or Blue.

Along with other #ACRENetwork members, we are calling on the next gov. to make sure no #rural community is left behind. We need policies that address diminishing public services, inadequate infrastructure, unaffordable housing & ageing populations. - Rural proof policy - Invest in services, infrastructure and affordable housing - Support community-led action - Enable communities to contribute to, and benefit from transition to #NetZero https://lnkd.in/enJz379F

Rural areas across the UK are often misunderstood by funders and policy makers as affluent places with no real deprivation or need, and that they are places that deserve little or significantly less investment. This stance overlooks the many hidden needs and inequities that exist in the countryside, leaving large swathes of the population disadvantaged simply because of where they live. More needs to be done to recognise and understand the intersectionality of the rural population and the marginalisation they face due to higher costs of living, lower wage employment opportunities and a lack of access to key services and connectivity. With many communities becoming more remote and facing a cycle of dormancy, exacerbated by business closures, service withdrawal and insufficient house building we believe that something needs to change. Plunkett UK advocates for the community ownership model as a way of addressing many of the challenges that currently exist in the countryside. To support this ambition however, we believe that there needs to be a comprehensive, cross-departmental rural strategy at the heart of Government. This is something we are pushing for along with other members of the Rural Coalition - [https://lnkd.in/e7kVbUMS]
📽️ “Many people think it's all about green and pleasant land when actually, in reality, there are many hidden needs that exist in rural areas.” Chris Cowcher, Plunkett UK’s Head of Policy and Communications, expresses our ask for the new Government to have a rural strategy, making sure that funding and support is in place to grow the rural community business network. #ruralcombiz
