When you start serving a profession and building relationships in that niche with the intentions of delivering value and having impact at scale...it's a bit of an experiment. You're not sure if it will work or you will have the impact you want to have. Now, 5+ years later leaning into the optometry profession and wanting to help ODs around the country feel more clear, confident, and capable not only about their money but also the business of optometry, I'm excited to announce the launch of a project that I've been working on for the better part of a year and a half is live: the "20/20 Money Membership™." Part of the launch of this idea was to ask those relationships I've been privileged to collaborate with over the years for a character testimonial on why I was the right person to lead a project like this. The responses blew me away. The one below (from friend and collaborative partner Nathan Hayes) was just one of the many pieces of feedback that I received (and have since shared on the Membership's website (link in comments). While I have goals and BHAGs about where this Membership can go, it all begins with the launch. I hope a segment of the #optometry profession (namely early-career #optometrists) sees value in this Membership. We'll see where this goes from here. For me, it’s not just about navigating life with my guide dog Bailey by my side—it’s about advocating for my son Leo, who and is registered as sight impaired. Every hospital appointment, every adjustment we make, and every step forward is part of a journey we take together. But World Sight Day isn’t just about our story—it’s about the 2.2 billion people worldwide living with some form of vision impairment. It’s a reminder to push for better access to eye care, education, and support systems for everyone. If you’re a parent navigating the challenges of sight loss or advocating for a child’s needs, know that you’re not alone. Did you know that 80% of what we learn is visual? Clear vision is important for a child’s success—not just in academics, but in all aspects of life, including their social and emotional well-being. Through the Alcon Children's Vision Program, alongside our partners, we conduct vision screenings for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students to identify those who need more comprehensive eye exams, glasses, or treatment. Seeing a child light up the first time they wear their new glasses is an unforgettable experience. Bright Vision Optometry underwent an expansion 1 year ago. Reflecting on this journey, here are 3 lessons I learned along the way: 1. Maintaining cash flow is vital for a small business. With our expansion, the cost of doing business exponentially increased. The months immediately after our expansion was stressful to say the least. Having a rainy day fund was our savior. 2. Don’t forget who you serve. After our expansion, I had a feeling of “LOOK AT ME, I MADE IT”. Then I realized it’s not about me. It’s about our practice, our patients and our team. The healthy synergy between our practice, our team and our patients is what created this opportunity. Keep your head down, put in the work and stay humble. 3. Maintain your balance. After our expansion, I went into 24/7 work mode and threw away the keys to the off switch. I was detached at home, often thinking about my to do list rather than my family. I lived an unhealthy lifestyle filled with binge stress eating and caffeine consumption. I did not work out or see my friends. Mentally, I felt lonely, stressed and not myself. Day 4 of 90 A Journey of Discovery Day four on LinkedIn, and it feels like a whole new universe has opened up to me… It takes me back to when I first got my contact lenses at 16. Back then I · was too self-conscious · thought glasses weren't cool · sat at the front of the class struggling to read on the board…. But then with the latest technology at the time, the optometrist fitted me with new contact lenses. After that, · I walked out of his practice · stepping into a world I was part of but had not fully realised. Suddenly, · I could read the shop signs, · see the texture of the black tar on the road, · notice the details of the trees and plants —everything looked different! The same sense of wonder has struck me here on LinkedIn. I have put new glasses on and now I see a universe I never knew existed! There are so many stars.. ·     red ones, ·     blue ones, ·     white ones ·     yellow ones, ·     big and small ones… each star shining in its own space, not touching each other but all finding their place to shine! And all of this awe because of one decision: TO Get Involved! ___________________________________________________________________________ There is a fountain of excitement bubbling up inside me. I don't know how this challenge will unfold, but if you are curious like me you are invited to follow me and see for yourself. I will be back tomorrow – with my glasses on!
