Blood in urine, also called hematuria, can indicate various conditions. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common causes, where bacteria infect the bladder or kidneys. Kidney stones, small hard deposits in the kidneys, can cause bleeding during urination. Enlarged prostate glands in men (BPH) or prostate cancer can lead to blood in urine. Inflammation or infection in the kidneys (glomerulonephritis) or bladder (cystitis) may also cause hematuria. Sometimes, more serious conditions like bladder or kidney cancer can present with blood in urine. 🌟 Our Research Team have announced our latest research study, called extend. 🌟 It's investigating how giving longer courses of antibiotics could benefit patients with serious abdominal infections, which can occur following an operation or a disease such as cancer. Over 30,000 patients suffer with this type of infection each year. If longer courses of antibiotics are better at curing and preventing infections, they may be better at keeping patients out of hospital. It may also reduce the chance patients will catch antibiotic resistant infections. Research is so important in our strategy to provide leading healthcare to the Wirral population as people who take part in research often have better outcomes. Autoantibodies to peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (#PAD4) have been associated with #erosive disease in established #rheumatoid #arthritis (#RA). A recent study compared the clinical and prognostic value of anti-PAD4 antibodies in patients with early and established RA. Results revealed that baseline anti-PAD4 antibodies are differentially associated with joint damage in early versus established RA, with an association with severe joint disease only apparent in those with established RA. Anti-PAD4 antibodies were modestly associated with lower #DAS28-CRP levels posttreatment in the early RA population; however, other disease metrics did not differ by anti-PAD4 antibody status. 🔗https://lnkd.in/dFGbZdMz

Severe immune #thrombocytopenia (ITP) caused by connective tissue diseases (CTD) may cause systemic bleeding and can even be life-threatening. There are many treatments for this disorder, but some patients do not respond. #Eltrombopag (a thrombopoietin receptor agonist) stimulates bone marrow to produce more platelets has been widely used in primary ITP, but there are few studies on CTD-ITP. A retrospective series of 20 CTD-ITP patients treated with eltrombopag after no response to first and second treatment options showed 70% complete response (ie 70% of patients had no detectable disease), and the drug was well tolerated. No undesired side effects were observed. This study provides more evidence for the use of eltrombopag to treat CTD-ITP that has not previously responded to treatment. 🔗https://lnkd.in/d_XFPKUk

Calpro Products Highlighted: This study relied on the Calpro Easy Extract and CalproLab ELISA to extract and analyze stool samples for fecal calprotectin (fCal). This accurate assessment aids in understanding inflammatory activity within the gut. This study highlights the potential of fCal and fecal myeloperoxidase (fMPO) as complementary tools for assessing disease during regular clinical care. By utilizing a combination of fecal biomarkers (e.g. fCal), CRP, and clinical disease activity, it is possible to identify individuals who are at risk of developing IBD complications.
